February 2017 Eroge Releases

February 1, 2017 at 12:31 am 11 comments

You want an eroge that looks like Gochiusa? New company Recette is happy to serve up the sweet Shugaten! -sugarfull tempering-. You want Nekopara, but with ninjas? Whirlpool comes to the rescue with NEKO-NIN exHeart. There’s quite a few imitations in this month’s short list, but at least there’s some promising titles, like IRODORI’s jidaigeki detective story Ouka Sabaki.

Short but not very sweet month. At least if you like real cane sugar and not that artificial plastic sugar. If you like cheap imitations then boy is this the month for you. A celebration of Chinese new year I suppose.

Onii-chan, Kiss no Junbi wa Mada Desu ka? Ecchi no Junbi mo Mada Desu ka?

Company: Tinkle Position
Game site: お兄ちゃん、キッスの準備はまだですか? エッチの準備もまだですか?
Release date: February 24, 2017
This is the fandisc for Oniikiss. The long-awaited summer vacation came a few weeks after imoutos Asahi, Mahiru, Yayoi and Saya became even closer to their onii-chan. It’s the beginning of the happy days when he gets to be with his imoutos all day long! Trading lots of loving kisses during the day! Choosing who gets to bring him a midnight snack and spend the night together with a kiss! The summer vacation in the Seguchi household has just begun!

Kisses for all my imoutos! Chu☆Chu!!

Fandisk. Only thing to note is I am amazed this game was considered worth having a fandisk. Even for the Micchi types out there this was a pointless game.

More ichaicha with imoutos is never a bad thing!

That’s always a bad thing for me. Though really the main problem I have is the stupid kissing crap in that game. Makes everything so pointless.

Shugaten! -sugarfull tempering-

Company: Recette
Game site: しゅがてん!-sugarfull tempering-
Release date: February 24, 2017
This is the debut work for Recette, a sister brand of Palette. Fueya is a mysterious town where faeries are said to reside. The ‘night of the fairies’ takes place once a year when diamond dust fills the sky. It is said that happy miracles occur on this night. Even though the townspeople mostly treat the legend as a funny tale, they still look forward to it every year.

There’s a small patisserie named Folkroll on the outskirts of the town. It’s been around for dozens of years and is known for their really delicious cakes. However, the old man who worked as the patissier was recently injured and had to be hospitalized. Without someone to make the cakes, the shop’s future was in danger.

The girls who worked there, Meru and Koori, didn’t know what to do and decided to make a wish on that special night for someone to come and save the shop. Then, a miracle happened and a mysterious young man Kurou appeared before them when they returned to the shop. He didn’t have any memories, but knew a lot about baking and agreed to work as the shop’s patissier.

It’s Gochiusa, Shiratama ver.! Recette focuses on healing-type moe-ge, so what better to start off with than a fluffy café game! There’s cute heroines (voiced by Anzu Mitsu, Kusuhara Yui and Fujisaki Usa), fairies and magic, cakes and sweets, all drawn by Shiratama. Of course I’ll be playing this. Hau~ omochikaeri~!

Poorly designed. Poorly written. Poorly drawn. All the fairies in the machine set from the start to solve any problems that may crop up through the story ruins any sense of value to be had in development. Frankly this reminds me of Da Capo. Not in a good way mind you. At the very least Da Capo put effort into their characters, which is something even I admit. Sure that was all they really put effort into but it still counts. When you strip that away from the game all you are left with is a ton of garbage setting mechanics that numb the reader to any kind of emotional investment. It is something along the lines of being able to say “Oh a fairy did it.” or “Whatever made their wishes come true.” neither of which should be considered viable lines of thought.

This is what leads to the writing issues. For something meant to be heartwarming and moe based the writing is obviously missing the point. None of the fairy references or random hobo protagonist (Also D.C.) are necessary here. Now I am aware some people (Micchi) happen to like things like wishes and magical pixy dust sprinkling beings that strip little girls naked and redress them to their tastes. I understand this. I may not agree, but I understand that others happen to like these things. The issue is not my personal taste on this matter, but throwing cutesy concepts into the plot or setting does not make moe. There lies the problem, the writing is wielding its own devices like the cudgel of a caveman.

Finally the art sucks. Do I need to even point out how awkward the proportions are especially with the eyes? Shading is also lacking. Throwing some hazy pastel blends doesn’t make moe any more than wishing it in writing. Then there is the hair that gives the impression of wigs made of wet cat. Sure I have seen way worse, but much like the writing, I feel insulted they feel such half assed work is enough to fool me or well anyone into thinking it is moe and therefore free from harsher critique.

Hey, I didn’t wish for loli-stripping fairies!

You would if you could.

Suisei Ginka

Company: 暁WORKS (Akatsuki WORKS)
Game site: スイセイギンカ
Release date: February 24, 2017
Ten years ago, there was an accident during the transport of chemicals in the port city of Mizuho, as well as a series of murders, but it is now just a part of history. At that time, Izana suddenly became separated from her best friend Tetsuo, and she never could come to terms with his disappearance.

This summer Tetsuo suddenly reappeared before the overjoyed Izana. However, he revealed to her a terrible truth…

The scenario is by Morisaki Ryouto (Hapymaher), so it should be decent. The OP suggests that there is more to the game than just swimsuits and indeed, that’s the case. In fact, the writing is similar to other Akatsuki Works games, with not everything being as happy as they seem on the surface. From the onset, there’s a suspicious aura around the protagonist, who reappears seemingly the same as before even though the reason for his disappearance was so sudden. Personally, I don’t really care for the fighting and “E project’ much, and the character relations seem just a bit too convenient (although I guess the accident affected a lot of people). One thing I didn’t like about the trial is the tacky transitions. I wonder what happened to the other girl that disappeared and if she will also make a reappearance at a critical point in the story.

Bye :(. Hi :(. Swimsuits :). Sums it up.

Selfre -Self Friend-

Company: ヘクセンハウス (HexenHaus)
Game site: セルフレ -セルフフレンド-
Release date: February 24, 2017
Shinobu is part of the camera club, which is lacking members other than him and the club leader Umi. One day, a close-up selfie focused on the large cleavage was posted on a website he runs. He thought that it looked like that of the honours student Ai, and she unwillingly admitted to taking the picture when he approached her about it. Surprisingly, instead of using it as blackmail, he reprimanded her for taking poor pictures. He offered to capture her beauty and she agreed, having been talked to in such a way for the first time.

The photos that Shinobu took of her were certainly quite attractive and were extremely well-received when they were uploaded online. After many photo shoots, they both began to get aroused and it soon led to sex. There were also many fine subjects at the school: the big-breasted beauty Umi; quiet but sometimes S kouhai Eri; the strong-willed but easily teased news club member Oruha; and, dreamy tomboy Io who knows his relationship with Ai. Which one of them will he capture next?

I’m amazed at his ability to recognize a girl by her breasts. Good job pervy protagonist! You deserve to be in a nukige!

4chan, or well I guess 2chan in this case, the eroge.

Tantei Seven

Company: Digital Cute
Game site: タンテイセブン
Release date: February 24, 2017 Delayed to May 26, 2017
Bango doesn’t like his own name, which has caused him to be teased since he was a kid. However, he has friends by his side: childhood friend Kasumi, best friend Reiji, and imouto Mariya. Together they formed the ‘paranormal research clab’ (the complete idiot Kasumi misspelled the name) at Kototoi Gakuen in Mina-Asakusa.

However, without the adequate number of members, their official club status was denied and their club room was taken by rival clubs. Bango and Kasumi were eager to find other members to search for supernatural activities with them. They gathered many unique individuals and they came upon strange events.

It all started when they entered a house full of junk in search for a lost cat. The place was a den of psychic phenomena, a theme park of malicious spirits. Yet still they advanced into the deepest parts of the house in pursuit of the mysteries of the former tenants. At the same time, a series of bizarre incidents befell the area around the school. First, a commotion regarding a dangerous drug. Then, the death of a cat who had been skinned. Finally, there was even a murder.

There was a doll left behind at each crime scene. Who is the culprit? They must use the special powers which they have possessed since their childhood to solve the crimes.

Welcome to Danganronpa: the eroge. This detective game focuses on the trinity of ‘mystery, occult and suspense’. There’s a main story, as well as side stories and side missions linking a cast of over 40 characters. The protagonist’s hax ability is ‘synesthesia glass’, which allows him to read the feelings of others. You can use this ability to determine if someone is telling the truth or not. The imouto’s ability is ‘sweet sweat’, which does exactly what you think it does: it makes you want to peropero protect her. Digital Cute’s games are always a bit different from the rest and at least offers a unique experience. It might be worth playing for the sheer hilarity of some situations.

Another of these games. Honestly I will never understand how anyone can get away making and selling this garbage. I have said this before so I’ll keep it short this time. Any mystery or detective styled game needs to keep things simple. All this extra crap, especially the special abilities just weakens the feelings of suspense while ruining much of the fun of trying to think ahead and solve it. There are tons of other things done poorly or just plain wrong here, but when they can’t even get the very core of it right, is there any value in pointing them out? At least for me I think not.

Ouka Sabaki

Company: IRODORI
Game site: 桜花裁き
Release date: February 24, 2017
This jidaigeki is the debut title by IRODORI. Shimei took up his post as the new administrator at the Nakamachi magistrate’s office, which had been founded to alleviate the burden on the offices to the north and south. He was followed by his cheerful and hard-working childhood friend Rimu and the strong-minded Sakura, who was dispatched from the Kitamachi magistrate’s office to supervise him.

Shortly after his arrival, a young girl Koume was brought before him on a charge of murder. She was to be sentenced the following day, and if she was found guilty of the alleged crime, she would be sentenced to death. Shimei noticed something suspicious in the recounting of the events and along with Koume’s desperation, he was convinced that she was not guilty.

But who is the true culprit? Will he be able to prove her innocence?

It is up to you to lay down the law with your heart of justice! There sure have been a lot of detective stories lately (including this month’s Tantei Seven), but this one’s a bit different in its presentation since it’s set in the past. The game cycles through daily life scenes, investigations and court trials during each chapter. A crime occurs during the ADV part and you have to collect evidence. Then, you listen to the plaintiff and the defendant plead their case during the trial and identify lies and contradictions to make the correct judgment. The artwork and cast are quite nice. I thought the trial was pretty good. It’s not too difficult (you can’t really fail), but there’s a decent amount of content for each case. Moreover, I liked the presentation during the court trial and the back and forth between the characters. The trial ended with a major cliffhanger, which leads to more cases. I think it might be an intriguing pick-up for this month.

Now I am not by any means a fan of these stories. Be they pure trash like the above Tantei Seven, or an entertaining series like Phoenix Wright used to be. So that said I am not a connoisseur by any means. However if you want to read such a story this month, I would by far recommend Ouka Sabaki over Tantei Seven, or even any of the other detective or mystery stories that have come out recently. The reason for this is that while I am not by any means saying it is well written or intelligently developed, they have kept things simple. Avoiding both the closed circle and ridiculous powers. So basically this is Phoenix Wright the eroge. Well seems to be closer to the older Phoenix Wright games, not the newer garbage that goes under the same name.

NEKO-NIN exHeart

Company: Whirlpool
Game site: 猫忍えくすはーと
Release date: February 24, 2017
Since ancient times, there exist human-like beings called ‘Ajins’ who descended from beasts and who possess special abilities and serve as ninjas to those that hold power. Two such nekomimi ninjas, Yura and Tama, came from the village of Fuuma to serve the protagonist as part of a contract from a long time ago. He resisted their loving advances at first, but gradually he was taken by their charm and determination. Even as he pondered how he would pay for their expenses and if there was even a need to have ninjas protect him, he began to see himself as their master. However, who is the person watching them from the shadows?

This is a low-price title which costs only ¥2000 yen, taxed included. It’s a small fee to pay to enjoy a new daily life with ninja cats that want you stroke them. But the real question is can they help you run a sweets shop?

Cheap is not an excuse for low quality. Less content sure. But Nekopara ninjas using the copy technique should be sprayed with water for the bad bad cats they are.

From the list above, I guess only Ouka Sabaki really interests me. I’ll probably play it if I’m not too burned out by detective games after finishing the latest Danganronpa.

I tend to agree with Zen that special powers in detective games can really mess things up (see Shinsou Noise : awful), and especially when they’re actually influencing the deduction ability of the hero, which is why Tantei Seven leaves me very wary. Still, I kind of like the special abilities of the Danganronpa games cast, it makes for memorable characters and forces to think a little bit outside the box.

Other than that, I may try Suisei Ginka, as it looks like a decent mystery and has Kiritani Hana in the cast. That’s about it, a really poor month indeed.

Huh, not a lot of games are out this month, sad
Well still got some from last month anw
    Cant wait for Sugaten~

  • 8. joyjason  |  February 2, 2017 at 12:20 am

It always feels weird to see games being released on my birthday. Especially because I have never seen a galge heroine with the same birthday as me, and that’s just feelsbadman.jpg.

Sugaten for me especially because I’ll need that “iyashi” through my grad school crap that I’m going through. Otherwise nothing seems very interesting and I’m STILL trying to complete some December titles.

  • 9. Touch the rainbow  |  February 5, 2017 at 2:37 pm

    What a fucking bad month

  • 10. Moreover  |  May 28, 2017 at 3:53 am

Now we only need to learn that Zen hates Danganronpa for his words to finally lose any credibility whatsoever.
