Let’s Enjoy Eroge Together!

August 6, 2010 at 4:52 pm 29 comments

The creative minds at MOONSTONE have come up with a way to use Twitter while playing eroge! With their patch for Angel Ring, you can now attach CGs, scenes, BGMs and voices to your tweet, which other players can watch and hear! They can also jump to where you are in the scene or replay the beginning of the scene. Your tweet will look like this in Twitter, while it looks like this in the game. This is amazing. Who says playing eroge is a solo hobby? I hope other companies decide to add similar functions.

ILLUSION is making a 3D anime shader and figure simulator Characolle! featuring characters from titles such as Beat Blades Haruka, Shin Koihime Musou and Little Busters. I believe this is just for modelling. They actually look pretty good. It is scheduled to come out this fall.

Also announced this week is ensemble‘s Damatte Watshi no Muko ni Nare!.

The following titles have been delayed:

Tanodan – September 24th
uni. – September 30th
12+ – October 29th

SAGA PLANETS have revealed on their blog that Kisaragi Gold Star‘s Ichika will be voiced by Samoto Fuuri and Kuriko will be voiced by Gogyou Nazuna. ふーりん!

Sad day for those living outside Japan as Getchu and AliceSoft have both blocked all foreign visitors. Guess they really don’t want me to know more about Noble Works

Kotoko topped the Utatemeguri chara poll. Lime is running a chara poll for Maximum Magic until August 20th.

Introducing the winner of the “Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi” gold prize: Boku-tachi wa Kansha Sareteiru, by Satoda Kazuto and illustrated by Kokudou 12-go. The story talks about a condition known as IPI syndrome (Crawler), where people desire to find out about others’ secrets. I’ll probably pick this up when it comes out on September 10th as the story is intriguing and the art is nice.

Another manga that caught my eye is Sengoku!?, by Rusty Soul and illustrated by Alto Seneca (Natsuiro Penguin). It’s a love-comedy set in the Heisei era. Release date is Aug 9th.

The fourth season of Hetalia Axis Powers will continue from the current season on September 10th.

Doujin circle Yumemisou‘s next project is Lyrical!, where the protagonist Makoto confesses to a girl but is rejected. Then she tells him she will use magic on him, dressing him as a girl (Kotoko) who ends up joining the girls’ band. I guess after Futaba Channel 2, they decided that people like cute traps and ran with it. I do like the art though by Sorimura Youji, who also worked on the 2-book imouto manga Cherry x Cherry.

It seems FREEing is making nendoroids too, with nendoroid Tomoe (Queen’s Blade) coming out this November for 3500 yen. I don’t really like their figures; they’re not that polished.

You’ll be happy to know that you can get Tenshi’s ultra spicy mapo tofu for 683 yen (2 packages). Tofu not included, but you get a meal ticket instead. Note: not recommended for children or those who cannot tolerate too much spice.

I’ll be away this weekend, so there’ll be no Saimoe updates until I’m back. No eroge, but maybe I’ll get some reading done. Gonna finish up Moeshouden when I’m back. It’s been pretty entertaining especially if you’re familiar with the characters (Ren is so cool! Nene is so cute!). I’m so curious as to what Shuri and Hinari’s true ages now…

Webclap responses:
Heeee . . . not much eroge tittle appear in August heh . . .
maybe cez Natsu Komiket . . .
(I clicked a loli, and this Clap-thing shown) by Ein.her//jar

Companies do take a break from working on new titles around Comiket to make merchandise, like giant Pannyas, cosplay outfits and 1/1 scale Sana figures. Well, maybe not the last one. BUT I WANT ONE.

Damn it, with Getchu blocking foreign visitors, there’s no more fast reliable method of getting info on games.

  • 2. nagiamatsu  |  August 6, 2010 at 6:09 pm

    no getchu… T__T even Alicesoft T__T
I was getting happy for a few days ago, until recently I open getchu and *BLAH!* uuu~ hau~ hau~

Getchu has blocked foreign access, but you cannot blame them… 99% of foreign hits are a total waste of bandwidth, especially hard on an image/video/Flash heavy site such as Getchu. Lately, I’ve seen Getchu has had numerous server issues and slowdowns related to bandwidth overloads. This affects Japanese customers.

In other words, a smart decision from a business/financial, and legal standpoint. Getchu is a SHOP, not an ENCYCLOPEDIA as people have been treating it. Japanese visitors are their customers and therefore top priority. They can’t legally sell internationally so those visitors don’t generate sales… and it’s not their job to generate foreign fandom for eroge companies either.

    • 4. Zakarum  |  August 6, 2010 at 6:57 pm

I should point out that it’s not a total block (yet) and there are some clever workarounds for foreign visitors…

      • 5. Nis  |  August 6, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Share the wealth(information) with the rest of us! How do we work around it? …Also, a second note of which is that I hear some noises of people trolling, saying how the Japanese’s xenophobia is kicking in again on the note of getchu. On the other hand, can you really blame them?

  • 6. Kamizawa  |  August 6, 2010 at 9:24 pm

    WTF Getchu blocked foreign IP
That’s explain why lately i can’t access the site.
WTF Japan what they want they isolated themselves from outside worlds

  • 7. dawningblue  |  August 6, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Not my Getchu!!! This just sucks.

  • 8. Amoirsp  |  August 6, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Moonstone has really been trying different things, haven’t they? Unfortunately I can’t read it but it feels like livestream but not really.

A Visual novel Encyclopedia would be rather useful. Though yes, certainly I did peruse getchu to look at game premise and character descriptions like an encyclopedia. The other useful property was the linking to the base sites and its search functions. “Best game” logos also can give a rough idea of what was enjoyed previously.

At least the block wasn’t in 2009 when I played trial version after trial version. I can understand the reasoning since it’s a shop, but trial versions were great to get a feel of more recent games (pictures speak really loud). I haven’t been looking at recent trial versions, so it’s not too bad, but it was indeed a useful site.

And here I thought it was my connection acting up… Curse the xenophobia!

Oh, and speaking of Maximum Magic, I chose to drop it before even getting a girl. The plot moves too slowly for my taste, and the character interactions aren’t very interesting.

  • 10. seele00  |  August 7, 2010 at 2:55 am

WAIT. Getchu blocked foreign IPs?! Okay, I could tolerate tha-

  • 11. Silver  |  August 7, 2010 at 4:52 am

What the heck… Anyways, we can still use Vndb.Org as our encyclopedia. I think it provides the summary although it does not really provides information for the characters.

    • 12. Amoirsp  |  August 7, 2010 at 7:37 pm

vndb is feasible but not only does information, screenshots, and votes have to be added first (thus not useful on newer releases), but you’d also have to know exactly what you’re looking at via text. Some of the summaries are based on getchu or other sites too, and the added information is based on those who added it.

Actually it’s more of a premise than a summary come to think of it. The art and character descriptions can be quite useful to know.

Lacking a character description lacks a lot too. If the game is less known then there’s a lower likelyhood of information. Then there’s no video and the search function is more stringent being more word/romanji intensive. You almost have to know exactly what you’re looking at already.

Yeah, it’s still a different encyclopedia (because unlike getchu it’s actually one in a sense). And then it’s also a loss on information on other products like CDs and figures I suppose.

In the end it doesn’t matter too much but it does suck to lose access to a site that’s pretty good that you use to find information on.

  • 13. hugh  |  August 7, 2010 at 10:10 am

I think this whole “social” VN reading thing as seen in the twitter patch and novelstream start-up is just a silly fad.

  • 14. someone  |  August 7, 2010 at 12:52 pm

Er, I’m in Britain and I can access getchu just fine, so…

    • 15. Zakarum  |  August 7, 2010 at 6:15 pm

Yes for now they have only blocked the www domain portion of the site, which means their mirrors such as cl3 are open. You will notice that most links clicked there redirect to the www portion however, meaning you must manually correct each address. Running into the 18+ attestation page requires some work. Finally, the mirrors are a bit flaky and run into some loading issues.

Loopholes such as these will be closed once they notice lots of people using them…

The best way is to use a dedicated proxy in Japan. Free public proxies are either way too slow to load a heavy site like Getchu, fail often, don’t work at all (such as CoDeeN/PlanetLabs), or are outright malicious connections.

  • 16. Wrathkal  |  August 7, 2010 at 11:24 pm

Guess now I’ll have to join the rest and directly go to the maker’s site in order to get info.

  • 17. nagiamatsu  |  August 8, 2010 at 12:07 am

    I can’t really blame them but sigh…
oh well, let’s start running in circle and start collecting as much as I can…with dowsing. :D
I would like to eat tenshi mapo tofu ^_^

  • 18. Reltair  |  August 8, 2010 at 12:31 am

So much blocking of foreign visitors on Japan sites. At least there’s always other resources or even VPNing if you’re desparate.

  • 19. Algester  |  August 8, 2010 at 5:42 am

ohh well… i guess its time to dig proxy time @_@ i still need to find a way to manage them… as well

  • 20. maina  |  August 8, 2010 at 10:43 am

As for getchu, this works fine for me:
http://privatepaste.com/f0eabb195f (from a thread on hongfire).

  • 21. LonelyAmure  |  August 8, 2010 at 3:35 pm

Ach, lol. Again, I’ve said that I loved Moonstone for their innovation and course of interaction via twitter. It’s an awesome idea~

As for the getchu block, I think I will have to go back to proxies… Ugh, the days when I was in junior high school and I used proxies… nnn~

  • 22. f1j4r(4d1l)  |  August 8, 2010 at 9:42 pm

for getchu i can pass the block but for alicesoft i don’t know…
uuuwww i’m very happy when i hear abaout Moonstone idea
    Nanka Tanoshimi^^

  • 23. TaikutsuJoker  |  August 9, 2010 at 9:48 pm

Getchu and Alicesoft, both following Minori early move in blocking foreigner. Moonstone designed the tweet interface well and neatly.

  • 24. Bob  |  August 10, 2010 at 5:54 pm

I don’t see how Getchu banning foreigners could possibly be a good business move. We account for less than 10% of their traffic so we’re not the cause of bandwidth issues. Also, despite the fact we can’t buy anything we still give them more pageviews, and that means more ad revenue. There are good reasons Japan’s population continues to decline, and you can see examples of them right here. Xenophobia and porn addiction.

    • 25. Zen  |  August 11, 2010 at 3:55 am

No matter how many people visit they are still using bandwidth and giving no return for the losses Getchu incurs. I am too lazy to check the exact amount as it has no bearing on my point but it is obviously significant enough for them to region block. There is no point for them to suffer an expense they cannot profit from no matter how small it is. This can only be a good business move for them as it saves them money, helps prevent international intervention and pressure, and does little to stop people who matter from accessing their site.

Furthermore for advertising revenue pageviews are not as important as where they are from, Japanese advertisements are useless for foreigners. What this means is the foreign visits to the site are not counted for advertising, meaning there is no padding to balance the cost of the bandwidth they use.

Finally a decline in population is not always a bad thing, at least the Japanese have enough sense not to overpopulate themselves into oblivion as most other countries, especially China and India are doing. There is nothing wrong with their “Xenophobia” as you put it either, they have their own culture and would obviously prefer to keep it that way. People should not expect Japan to bow and scrape to foreign interests simply because they want or expect things to be done the same as their own country. It would be nice to see more people acknowledge the meaning to the saying “When in Rome do as the Romans do”. Not to mention if Japan ever did lose their sense of self you can kiss their entertainment industry goodbye.

      • 26. Amoirsp  |  August 11, 2010 at 4:26 pm

Excellent point. Though expanding beyond the threshold of Japan is always something to consider, just not practical right now.

  • 27. Micchi  |  August 17, 2010 at 2:21 pm

It looks like Getchu has removed the block. I don’t know what’s up. I’m not convinced it’s xenophobia though.

@Zakarum: I agree there’s not really a point for them to be open to foreigners since they don’t ship overseas anyway (although I wish they did). The site has been loading really slow lately.

@Amoirsp, Silver: There really should be an English eroge database. VNDB is a good start, but it takes most of its info from elsewhere (even here). One reason I like Getchu is because they have detailed info on characters as well. As for demos, there are sites devoted to hosting those so that’s not a problem.

@hugh: Probably. It was updated so players won’t be spoiled as easily, but the system isn’t really being used that much. Or maybe there just aren’t that many eroge players.

@nagiamatsu: I would like to eat Tenshi too… I mean, mapo tofu!

    • 28. nagiamatsu  |  August 20, 2010 at 11:36 am

      sure~ Tenshi would be delicious~~ I mean in cute way~~ ^__^

  • 29. Hinano  |  August 28, 2010 at 9:02 pm

LOL I really don’t give a fk that I was using getchu as an encyclopedia. They listed character names in HIRAGANA for me so I didn’t have to figure out what the hell the character names were. The official sites for some of the games I play just list the kanji in a JPG file.

Did I reload their site every single fking day and do this? No. I did it like once a month if not less. This is idiotic and yes its XENOPHOBIC. (o・益・o)
