Time to Try Out New Light Novels!

I love Amazon Japan. It’s a bit expensive, but it’s really quick. Got my latest shipment of manga and light novels barely 3 days after I placed the order. This was mainly since I finished up the five volumes of Oreimo and Dekotsun that I had and I needed something to read over lunch at work. So I decided to pick up a few new titles that peaked my interest.

I love the moment when you open a box you’ve been anxiously waiting for. I think I had ADD checking the tracking status every hour at work. Anyways, time to open the box!

  • Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight! 4
  • Galaxy Angel 3rd 4-6

Light Novels

  • Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai 1-3
  • Dekotsun 6
  • Galge no Sekai yo, Youkoso! 1-3
  • Ore no Imouto wa Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai 6
  • Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai! 1-3
  • Prave! 1

  • Mashiroiro Symphony 4koma 1
  • Yoiko no Moecco

Just wrapping up relatively old manga series that were out the stock during the last shipment in February. Both Manabi Straight and the GA series (manga/game that is) are very enjoyable to read. You’ve probably noticed me mentioning the Mashifoni 4koma as well as the imouto pantsu book on past weekly news. Yes, I gave in. Just look at all cuteness!

I just leafed through the mook so far. There’s a bunch of illustrations, some focus on anime with plenty of pantsu (kissxsis, Strike Witches, Sora no Otoshimono, etc), a section detailing the grand history of pantsu and a few manga shorts to cap it off. Below are a sample of some of the illustrations.

Now for the main dish: the light novels. I think I’m going to order more light novels instead of manga now. They’re cheaper, have lots of content and helps with building Japanese vocabulary. I read a volume of Nanatsuiro Drops over the weekend and finished it in like half an hour! Light novels are definitely more bang for your buck.

I’ve been left on a cliffhanger for Dekotsun, so I just had to get the last volume immediately. Otherwise, I think I’m gonna go crazy. Of course, Oreimo is a must. By the way, the second volume of the manga probably will be out in August. Since I’m starting to get into light novels, I decided to find more series that I would like. I’ve heard great things about Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, while Famima! and Galge no Sekai yo, Youkoso! appealed to my imouto and eroge likes, respectively. Prave! is about some guy who defeats a maou in another world, then comes back to his own world, but is followed by girls who think he’s a hero. However, he’s actually the weakest in the class.

However, the one I’m most looking forward to out of all the new series is Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai!, by Matsu Tomohiro. Now you probably may have heard of this name since he also wrote Mayoi Neko Overrun!, which is currently airing. In this story, Yuuta is a university student who ends up being the guardian/father of 3 young girls (ages 14, 10 and 5) after their parents went missing. It seems to be a nice comedy and I’m really interested in how the character relations work. Can’t wait to start reading… tomorrow!

If I were in charge of the custom, I would confiscate those things immediately, for my own amusement of course. So how did it slip the custom so easily..? Since I’m pretty sure that those things at least must go under screening first if you look at the covers, or is it not?

Well, Amazon merchandise very rarely (pretty much never) gets reviewed by customs. In this country, they’re mostly concerned about making sure they charge the right taxes, and Amazon is very good about invoice accuracy and overall reputation. That being said, even if they did screen it, there’s nothing really confiscate-worthy in there anyway (at least according to the recently-released guidelines).

Maybe I should get the 4koma if only for the cover.

Just wondering how high must your japanese level be to read one of those light novel. I actually bought bakemonogatari light novel and it is beyond my ability…

and If I already have us amazon account, can I log in through using that password or do I need to create a separate account for jap amazon?

@Kresnik: As relentlessflame mentioned, Amazon JP is quite detailed on the invoice, so I don’t believe they even bothered with it much. I wish the duties were less though…

@relentlessflame: If they confiscated my imouto pantsu, I will be very very angry.

    @SnooSnoo: Uryu!

@aquaspirit39: There’s little to no furigana in light novels so you should be able to read the kanji (or at least know most of their meanings), as well your standard grammatical structures. The actual vocabulary level varies from series to series. For example, Oreimo is pretty easy, while I’d expect something like Index/Railgun will have harder words.

Also, you will need to create a separate account for Amazon JP. They are the same brand, but aren’t related. So, I use different accounts for Amazon JP and CA.
