Getchu 2009 Eroge User Rankings

April 11, 2010 at 2:25 pm 7 comments

Since it’s a light news week, I’ll also recap the Getchu 2009 eroge user rankings that came out a month ago (Yes yes, I know I’m late). The big winner was GIGA’s Baldr Sky series, with Dive2 placing top overall, as well as in scenario, system and music. Mashifoni and eden* both did well, while Hoshimemo and Tenshin Ranman were in the running across many categories.

I’ll list the top 3 for each category with some comments (along with Zen).

1. Baldr Sky Dive2 “Recordare”
2. Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!!
3. Mashiroiro Symphony

Other well-received games include Oretsuba, Muramasa and Hoshimemo. My personal picks are Natsunagi and Hoshimemo.
I would have chosen Natsu no Ame and Flyable Heart as the best games I played in 09.

1. Baldr Sky Dive2 “Recordare”
2. Dies irae ~Acta est Fabula~
3. Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai

Natsunagi was quite emotional, while Mashifoni gives you warm feelings. Sakura Sakura was well worth the year-long wait.
Flyable Heart had an interesting premise, while Natsu no Ame was a great example of how even a simple story can be great. On a side note Sakura Sakura was a bit of a let down in my opinion.

1. Baldr Sky Dive2 “Recordare”
2. Himegari Dungeon Meisters
3. Baldr Sky Dive1 “LostMemory”

Honorable mention goes to Tenkuu no Yumina and Tapestry, with its manga-style presentation. It was a refreshing change and I hope to see more games using this system. I think Warinaki‘s wide screen movie-style engine also was well done, but we’ve already seen it before in âge’s previous games (Muv Luv).
Personally I enjoyed Owarinaki‘s minimalist system over the rest, other than that nothing stood out as anything too special to me.

1. eden*
2. Mashiroiro Symphony
3. Full Metal Daemon Muramasa

Tenshin and Hoshimemo round out the top 5, so I really don’t have any complaints about this.
Seems more like a popularity contest than seriously critiquing the graphics if you ask me as eden may have had amazing backgrounds but the characters failed to match well. The others were pretty standard. Personally I liked Natsu no Ame the best as far as graphics.

1. Baldr Sky Dive2 “Recordare”
2. eden*
3. Mashiroiro Symphony

While Mashifoni is my personal pick, Warinaki and Tapestry also had nice BGMs.
I cannot for the life of me think of any game that really stands out here so.. whatever.

Opening Movie
1. eden*
2. Tenshin Ranman
3. Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai

I plan to make a post later with my favorite OPs from 2009, in terms of music, style, creativity, among other criteria. Hoshimemo‘s definitely should’ve been higher than 9th though in my opinion.
While I do not agree with the eden* op being anything special considering it was about as creative as a sunset shot, I don’t care much for OPs in general so meh.

1. Kirishima Rain (Baldr Sky Dive1)
2. Ototsu Yume (Hoshizora no Memoria)
3. Minazuki Sora (Baldr Sky Dive2)

The character rankings pretty much aligned with mine, with Yume, Mare, Sumire, Miu and both Sana (Tenshin and Mashifoni) all making the top 10. Congrats! ^^
Rikako, Mayuri, no one else matters.

1. Machigurumi no Wana
2. Bishoujo
3. Himegari Dungeon Meisters

These aren’t really the type of games I’m interested in, but I’ll throw my support behind IchaPri!.
Natsunagi and Hoshimemo.
… you must be joking…

Low Price
1. Free Friends
2. Momoiro Guardians
3. Vanish!

Low priced games usually mean short stories or a focus on ero instead of a well-thought out story. In other words, you get what you pay for. I do have to say softhouse-seal’s Lucky Bird was so ridiculous, it was pretty funny.
I have no idea I have not played any of these games, so I will just say I can already predict next years winner in this category.

Just goes to show a little marketing and hype can bring you to the top :D; it’s all about strategy, not to say Recodare wasn’t good though. But, ahahaha lucky bird was so crazy and ridiculous it WAS funny! Actually kind of surprised someone else would know of it.

Based on the commentary it certainly looks like Natsu no Ame would have been a viable/honorable mention in some category, particularly for Zen (I wouldn’t say darkhorse but something along that line.)

Mashiro Iro Symphony is too easy to come across, so I’m not really surprised it appears top three in what, three categories? It stands out but eh. [In contrast, Natsu no Ame doesn’t really stand/pop out everywhere.]

Well Kantoku character designs are always welcome, particularly in a game that was functionally interesting.

Well as far as Natsu no Ame obviously I have to choose from a game I have played in order to give an honest opinon otherwise it is merely speculation. As Natsu no Ame was the best overall game that I played last year which was actually made in 09 it is no surprised I would have picked that over other choices.

I also do my best to remove personal bias when evaluating anything so instead of just choosing based on my tastes I make an attempt to think about the value objectively. As a result the user ranks to me appear as simple taste and or fanboy driven choices given the rankings and repeats. Well that is when taken as a generalization, I am not saying all were a result of that. An example would be eden* I think it deserves to be on the list due to the amazing backgrounds, on the other hand due to the hinderance of the character art I feel it should not be first due to such an inconsistency.

Somehow I forgot about the simple part about actually playing the game, as I wouldn’t submit a vote on something I didn’t play. Otherwise regarding natural bias, it always happens but you seem to review more objectively so it’s a nice read. [Then again bias is also interesting to read.] The pointers of flaws and contrasts is good to know.

Granted, you stating Natsunagi and Hoshimemo having the best ero was certainly a good chuckle. Though that’s merely speculation (wait no, you did play those I believe.)

Well with bias I do like to include a little bit when I write but I try to make it kind of obvious so it is apparent when it is a simple opinion compared to actual comments on a game. This is actually why I am still writing the KoiSora review, double checking the writing to make sure it is not just my opinions or bias.

I did not play Natsunagi nor Hoshimemo, I listed both simply as a joke to make fun of Micchi’s choices as I do not play any games just for ero I had nothing else to list. I did talk with Micchi while he was playing so I understand all the major points of both games anyway.

What exactly makes Baldr Sky so good, I wonder…

  • 7. Micchi  |  April 13, 2010 at 8:30 pm

@warum: Rolling down the hill, into the store, into the changing room, losing his clothes, pulling her panties down just as she bends over AND jamming it in!

@Zen: There was bike roleplay H in Natsunagi!

@Wrathkal: Combination of scenario and system? Then again, I can’t understand why people put so much emphasis on gameplay. Maybe it’s just me…
