Saimoe 2009 Main Draw
The main draw for Saimoe 2009 has been determined and it’s now underway! I’ve attached some charts compiled by Frustra from AnimeSuki. The following are all the main draw entrants! You can also view the draw and schedule here.
I’ll be offering my predictions for the block winners and runners-up later in this post. Block predictions will be done in separate posts round by round and results (with time charts) will be updated as they are announced. I should go get the cardboard ready. My favorites (with support vids), links, as well as some match-related images will be in the Saimoe page.
Chara Intro Video
Not all of the characters ended up in the main draw (and some didn’t qualify for the tournament at all due to airing time), but this MAD gives you a good overview of the main contenders from this year’s installment.
The first preliminaries are usually a good indicator of popular series and characters to look out for over the duration of the tournament. Generally the quarterfinalists all placed in the top 3 of their preliminary groups. In this year, Saki, K-ON! and Strike Witches join Clannad, Hayate no Gotoku!! and Lucky Star as top contenders. Saki sure is strong. KyoAni will have another strong outing as usual. I am happy that Haruhi and Eva chars didn’t fare that well.
Advancing from the second prelims are a bunch of characters who serve as fodder in the first round. Liechtenstein is cute.
The obvious favorite is Tacos Yuuki, although Mei is also pretty moe (especially to me). The top half of the block should be between Chiaki and Yutaka. I’ll go with Yutaka because she’s cuter.
Kataoka Yuuki (Saki) over Kobayakawa Yutaka (Lucky Star)
Mio fans will be going crazy over this block. Konata and Tsukasa will probably suffer from last year’s Lucky Star final. Will Fuuko be able to do well this year after her run last year? Let’s not forget about Horo and Yuno too. This is a tough block but there’s tougher ones to come.
Akiyama Mio (K-ON!) over Horo (Spice and Wolf)
This is a pretty weak group with either Kyou or Kotomi representing Clannad off the bottom half of the block. Top half is up in the air. It might come down to series popularity.
Fujibayashi Kyou (Clannad) over Takei Hisa (Saki)
Another weak group with either Ui and Komoe taking the top. Bottom gets a little interesting with old-timers Ranka and Hanyuu facing off against Koromo who’s currently getting major screen time in Saki. I like Koromo.
Hirasawa Ui (K-ON!) over Amae Koromo (Saki)
The top half of the block is very tough with Yami, Hinagiku, Yui and Rika. Assuming Mio and Ui both winning, Yui will have a much harder time. I’d love to have a Hina/Hamster block final, but I’ll go with Minori instead.
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!!) over Kushieda Minori (Toradora!)
I don’t think Kagami will be able to repeat or even come close. This time around Maria didn’t get shafted in the first round, but she’ll probably meet Kagamin in the 3rd round for a rematch from past years. Kagamin meanwhile might get a 2nd round matchup with Ami and Taiga. Split votes will be interesting here. Azunyan will ride to victory over Nagisa in the bottom.
Nakano Azusa (K-ON!) over Hiiragi Kagami (Lucky Star)
I really don’t like Haruhi and others might feel the same after the neverending episodes of late. Having said that, I can’t see anything stopping another Yuki/Haruhi 3rd round encounter. Ritsu will have problems if other K-ON! chars do well. I’ll go with the captain.
Fukuji Mihoko (Saki) over Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu)
I don’t understand why people love Nodocchi so much. Yes, I intentionally made the block final Nodoka/Saki for the lulz. Nagi and Rena both have a decent chance at upsetting Saki though since she’s not the most popular Saki girl even though she’s the protagonist.
Haramura Nodoka (Saki) over Miyanaga Saki (Saki)
