Summer 2009 Anime

With the spring season mostly drawing to a close, new summer shows will be taking their place. The summer anime season is usually not that good, but this summer has two heavily hyped shows in Umineko no Naku Koro ni and CANAAN. The above video is a collection of PVs and related articles if there’s no PV. An English chart of upcoming shows is here. Just like last time, I’ve included the links to the official sites and will just comment a bit on each series as there’s lots of anime-centric blogs that will cover this later anyway. I’ve also added a section on the sidebar. More info off MOON PHASE.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Umineko no Naku Koro ni is a must-watch show for me. I’m sure that you will all like it, especially if you liked Higurashi Ryukishi07’s works. Other than that, I’ll probably check out Sora no Manimani. I wanted to get the manga, but ended up holding off. Kanamemo maybe too, since it looks cute.

Weiß Schwarz (06/05 Fri): I never really understood the whole obsession with trading cards. This reminds me of Yugioh… just a lot cuter.

Umi Monogatari (06/24 Wed): I like the main site. The idea of the meeting of two worlds is interesting. Decent art and recognized seiyuu. Probably will check this out.

Fight Ippatsu! Jyuden-chan!! (06/25 Thu): Tentacles.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni (07/01 Wed): This is the series to watch. While it seems like just a normal murder mystery, it is anything but. I’m really curious how they’ll use red text and explain the epitaph and other stuff. I want my bunny girls now!!!!! うー うー!

Aoi Hana (07/01 Wed): One focused on relationships. I like the art.

NEEDLESS (07/02 Thu): Passing on action genre. Reminds me of Gurren Lagann.

Taishou Yakyuu Musume (07/02 Thu): Another baseball anime, this time set in 1925 and with girls.

Bakemonogatari (07/03 Fri): As the name suggests, it’s a series about spirits and ghosts. The PV creeped me out.

Element Hunters (07/04 Sat): A group of under-13 kids fighting to prevent chemical elements from disappearing. Sounds and looks tacky.

CANAAN (07/04 Sat): One of the highly anticipated shows this season. Based off VN 428, which received one of the few perfect scores from Famitsu. I can’t say I’m that hyped about it, but since people have been saying good things about it, I’ll check it out.

Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (07/04 Sat): Third season of despair. Didn’t watch the first two, so no interest.

Princess Lover! (07/05 Sun): I’m still amazed that this Ricotta title managed to get an adaptation before so many much more deserving eroge. I guess it might have something to do with the Saber lookalike.

Kanamemo (07/05 Sun): I like the cute designs. It seems to be more of a slice-of-life series, so I’ll be checking this out.

GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class (07/06 Mon): A 4koma about art school. Sound familiar? It’ll be hard following Hidamari Sketch, but it seems more comedic.

Sora no Manimani (07/07 Tue): Ok, I’m a sucker for star-related stuff and childhood friend reunions. So a show about an astronomy club is right up my alley. They’ve done one for Hani Hani. I can’t wait for one for Hoshimemo too…  *crosses fingers*

Spice and Wolf II (07/08 Wed): More Horo for you.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (07/09 Thu): I have never felt an earthquake before, but I guess it’s a risk that the Japanese are well aware of. Seems like it has to deal with the drama that happens post-earthquake.

Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou (07/11 Sat): Common magic school theme. However, the art is nice and Koyomi is cute.

Hetalia Axis Powers 2 (07/24 Fri): Second season to this racist generalizing comedy.

Umi Monogatari

I’m really hyped up for this summer’s anime! Definitely watching Umineko and Hetalia.

However, I think it’s really unfair of you to call Hetalia racist at first glance. Making fun of some stereotypes does not equal racism. Hetalia is just a series with vivid characters that makes even the most boring historical facts hilarious. It is the farthest thing from racist.

Now that I’ve gotten that over with, I’m curious as to what Umineko’s actually about. There seems to be older and more western style characters than Higurashi. I’ll also be checking out Kanememo, GA, and Sora no Manimani.

Ya, I don’t view Hetalia as racist. From what I’ve read, it’s quite comedic actually. The remark is just a reference to a previous problem where South Koreans claimed the series was ‘racist’ and boycotted it.

Umineko is really good. Look forward to it ^^
