Thanks for dropping by! Most games have free trials available for download off their official site before the release of the full game. Playing them is a good way to know if the game will interest you since they usually contain the common route plus some sample ero scenes. Comp problems are OK now!

August is planning a spinout game, Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai -Houkago Shippo Days-. It probably is something small for summer Comiket.

Ginta has announced her departure from Chuable Soft after 10 years. She will continue on as a freelancer, so we’ll likely see her works pop up somewhere in the near future.

There are 3 groups (Honey Sound, Funky Note, Groovy Tune). Each group for this rhythm game is available for ￥4800. If I were to get one, it’d be Funky Note of course, since it has the twins, Yayoi, Iorin and Hibiki. Perfect!

Finally a figure of Koikishi‘s Yuu! PLUM’s 1/7 scale figure of her will be out in June for ￥9500.

There’s also two Super Sonico figures: a ￥68000 baby doll by Arcadia and a less expensive 1/5 scale Sonicomi package figure from Orchid Seed. Both look nice though. I don’t know if I’d ever consider buying a doll, they’re so expensive…

As you may know, the mobile game YuzuPara is out and I’ve been playing it with one goal in mind. Hint: Begins with S. There’s also a new Love Plus social game, featuring a new heroine, while the Koihime arcade will be ported over to the PC with a May 31st release date.

Yamaguchi Noboru, the author of the Zero no Tsukaima series, passed away after two years fighting cancer. He was also involved in many FrontWing titles, including the ‘Uta‘ series, Kanaria, Green Green, Boy Meets Girl and Clochette’s Kamipani!.

Still recovering from jet lag, so I’m gonna hit the sack. There’s still a ton of photos for me to sort through, maybe I’ll post some later…

We’re back again! This post is probably going to be slightly late as we’re all getting really busy! But that aside, there is a larger amount of sci fi anime coming out in the spring. As much as I wanted it to happen, the selection isn’t exactly impressive. Although I do think age and real life is taking its toll on me, I still do hope to see anime reach a new golden age. So far as it stands, I’m having more fun rewatching Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Late and totally not my fault.. maybe… Regardless of my busy schedule or lazy lack of care towards anime that haven’t done much to inspire confidence of late I guess I am sorry for causing the post to be late. All that said this season is the very least better than the previous by a noticeable margin. While we have yet to truly break free of the moe slice of life and romance comedy variations there are at least more options to choose from this season. It is very nice to see an increase in science fiction, although to be honest most of them are pretty bad there is hope that with enough series being thrown out there will be some good shows mixed in eventually.

Date A Live (03/30 Sat)

Adapted from a light novel, this anime heavily reminds me of The World God Only Knows as it involves a young man saving the world by capturing the hearts of young girls.  Sure we have all this terminology like space quakes, and such, but overall we’re left with a harem anime. Cute girls and flashy special attacks, but I think I’ll most likely be turned off if the protagonist turns out to be of a generic cookie cutter build.

World ending importance placed on children’s romantic relationships, a truly brilliant and original idea for a story. In the end as Wanko already said this is hardly anything new but as far as attempts go to combine themes go it is a pretty terrible attempt. Throwing money at animators and composers to use a randomly chosen light novel as a basis does not make for a memorable anime.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge (04/03 Wed)

So our main protagonist here has a hair cutting fetish, which eventually leads him to a young girl he must save from a “murder game”. It’s really hard to say given the description, but hey at least his scissors has a neat name, “dansai bunri no crime edge”.  With the genre tags stating that it’s also within the action category, I guess we’ll be seeing some scissor action. It’s starting to remind me a bit of To Aru Majutsu no Index, but at least we’ll see both this crime edge and the imagine breaker this season.

Almost like they are trying to bank on the appeal an oddity generates with the protagonist and his hairy loli. I was never a fan of the murder game type of stories as the setup is there to forcibly give everyone a reason to kill each other which honestly is unnecessary with a well written story. Writing more sensible motivation may take a little more effort than coming up with some game or closed circle or anything along those lines where the actions are built into the setting instead of characters but when that extra few hours of thinking and effort applied to write it in well are invested the results are more than worth it.

Hataraku Maou-sama (04/04 Thu)

Going from Maoyuu to Hataraku Maou-sama feels like switching from Pepsi to Diet Pepsi. At least for a romance comedy, it’ll be more interesting than the generic crap that usually comes out.

Not a whole lot of purpose to the point of the demon lord theme aside from using it as a means to generate “Unique” yet recognizable character archetypes for a romance comedy. Otherwise there is very little here worth noting as anything beyond standard fodder for the genre.

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince (04/04 Thu)

I already have bad thoughts about this anime as I see the main protagonist there fooling around in that picture. Not much information except for the overall premise of harvesting resources from space, but mecha anime recently have either been hit or miss. After watching Aquarion Evol, I have lost faith in the new giant robot anime. I don’t think this will be the anime to bring back my love for it either.

While I enjoy a good sci-fi mecha or not there is a definite trend in the last ten or so years away from the series like the older Gundams, Evangelion, and even Full Metal Panic that defined what a good mecha could be compared to the likes of the Power Rangers. Continuing with the modern trend of poorly made mecha this season does not disappoint anyone into that sort of thing delivering this particular gem of modern day under achievement.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru (04/04 Thu)

Anti-social guy as the protagonist hrmm… no problem! In the world of anime, you’re guaranteed a harem! I’m pretty sure he’ll capture those two above, and will probably add 2-3 more before the series end. 2D makes everything so easy.

It seems like the majority of anime today has come down to how best to mix up the standard romance comedy by adding some theme to the same exact type of characters. Fitting into this style perfectly we have anti social protagonist meets school beauty via being forced into club interaction.

Photokano (04/04 Thu)

Despite having a protagonist that utilizes a camera, this changes nothing :( A standard harem or romance anime that does nothing but remind me of how old I am, man am I already tired of this stuff.

Devil Survivor 2 The Animation (04/04 Thu)

The Shin Megami Tensei games have always been a great demon fighting RPG series, and with how Persona 4 did as an anime, I do think that this will work out decently. I personally haven’t tried out Devil Survivor 2, but I did play the first one. Although the story in the first game wasn’t really anything you would proudly tell anyone about, it was still a fun overall experience. As I have said earlier, I do think that this anime has a chance of turning out decently, but I wouldn’t place any higher hopes beyond that. So don’t expect a 9/10 anime, because you’ll be disappointed :3

This series always felt a little off to me so I was never all that interested. Maybe had they put some extra effort into sculpting the setting to be less chuuni maybe there would be something worth it here.

Aku no Hana (04/05 Fri)

Last season I was asking for something more serious, but nothing along these lines. I don’t think I want to spend anytime seeing a boy face his psychological issues as he has to deal with blackmail, love, and his own sins. But I do commend the fact that they’re airing something that’s out of the norm, and maybe I’ll give it a shot. But most likely, this may be too dark for me.

Rather than a well written piece about the darker side of human emotions this series feels almost like an attempt to be edgy in a dark way by pushing the bounds in order to provoke a reaction from the audience. Whether right or wrong series based on characters making poor decisions never sat well with me.

Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Bride (04/05 Fri)

The only thing I really enjoyed seeing here was the genderbent versions of loli Sanada Yukimura and twintail Kanetsugu Naoe. If you guys are into fanservice and genderbent versions of historical figures, then go right ahead. I’m fine with seeing occasional screenshots :3

I found watching the paint drops more entertaining than the show itself, which says a lot about how bad I felt this was. Silly harem gender swap series pretty much sums this one up.

Zettai Bouei Leviathan (04/06 Sat)

Sometimes when a season is so bad, this becomes more appealing. Cute dragon girls fighting to defend their world from evil invaders may not seem like much, until they’re voiced by Kirino, Kuroneko, and Ayase! In the end this may fill up my Dog Days slot.

If one were to find some way to distill the very essence of whatever vile concoction has corrupted and plagued the anime industry this series would be the purified extract. Now that Strike Witches is gone it seems every attempt has been made to repeat an atrocity that should have been banned by international convention as a crime against intelligence.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai S2 (04/06 Sat)

Speaking of Kirino, I honestly have no idea how this season is supposed to go after the events of the first season. The appeal of this series may have already worn off on me though, so I don’t think I’ll be covering it. Hopefully Micchi-senpai will offer some words!

Yeah… no. This series was amusing for a whole of five minutes as someone who reads a lot of eroge, beyond that it is pretty much moemoe weeaboo fodder.

Yondemasuyo, Azazel-san Z (04/06 Sat)

If it’s anything like the first season, I’m going to enjoy seeing these cute chibi demons wreak havoc on the mortal world again. Despite their cute image, this show is definitely targeting an older audience, and its crude humor is something you need when every other series out there that you’re watching is full of fluffy and frilly goodness.

Finally a series I actually enjoyed. The violent humor with the demons coupled with the personalities of the humans made for a simple but enjoyable show. Simple physical humor coupled with the silly antics of the entire cast means that even though there is little to no real story to speak of the episodes were fun to watch without taking itself too seriously.

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san (04/06 Sat)

I sort of enjoyed Seto no Hanayome, but just looking at this picture I grabbed for this series, I don’t think this will be as enjoyable. The lack of scanlations for the 8 volumes that are out also makes it a bit worrisome. But really, who knows how entertaining a drunk crazy mermaid can be? >_O;

Do us all a favor and throw her back.

Shingeki no Kyojin (04/06 Sat)

I’ve read a bit of this series and well, if you’ve seen the first episode of Muvluv: Total Eclipse, it should give you an idea of how this series somewhat pans out. The titans are overwhelmingly strong, and our main characters are constantly risking their lives to fight against these giants who end up eating you while sporting their best troll faces. Full of despair and tragedy, this is one of the more darker series in this season. Dark in the sense is that the lives of characters get snuffed out faster than I can go to the bathroom.

I have read some of this series as well and must say while it has some things I think the editing staff should have modified to increase the appeal the general idea and presentation is not a bad one. Unusual in the visceral nature of the series I am quite surprised to see it turned into an anime. Perhaps if the production teams do not chicken out and turn down the violence this series may be at least partially a return to the anime style of the 80s and 90s before the kiddie gloves were strapped over the entire medium. Much of the success or failure will however depend on the story itself, something I have not read enough of to be confident in despite feeling surprisingly hopeful about the series in general. The resolution of the story in particular is going to define how the entire series works out, both with how the giants are explained and worked into the setting and the progress to the conclusion of the characters involvement. In other words depending on how the person watching feels about the very few characters worth growing attached to by the end and in response to the end will seal the fate of this series for good or ill.

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 (04/07 Sun)

Despite watching a lot of the older stuff, I never actually checked out the original series of this. Quite interesting that they went a special route with this, by having the anime released as a series of movies before the official broadcast. So technically, if you were a die hard fan of this, you would have probably watched the whole series in theaters before the television viewers. According to a random reviews I’ve read, the reception is positive and it’s likened to a Battlestar Galactica. Well, this should wash off the horror of watching high school girls playing as space pirates~

While I typically find older series much better than anything we have nowadays, I have always felt certain stylistic aspects can make these older shows more difficult to accept. One such example both Yamato and Captain Harlock are guilty of is how their spaceships so closely resemble actual sea-going ships. This along with rather simplified technology in general always made me feel as though these series were closer to children playing in cardboard boxes with plastic toy guns than any kind of actual scenario being played out in the chosen setting. That said I will have to dig up the older series before I touch anything new, not understanding the background makes it much more difficult to understand what is good or bad about the series itself, or if it’s just some new age director or writer trying to alter a classic to suit their tastes.

Glass no Kamen Desuga (04/07 Sun)

I always wondered where this certain art style came from since I’ve seen this parodied a lot. Although the original classic is a shoujo manga, I want to see how this new version will turn out. From a battle for a fabled movie role to now the position of gang leader, I don’t know what the author is thinking xD; Then again I would see this for the art alone… I’ve seen it parodied too much, that I’ve taken interest in it!

I… don’t even know what to say about this one, guess it is one of those I need to watch to actually form any kind of actual opinion on.

Suisei no Gargantia (04/07 Sun)

I do wonder how Psycho Pass is turning out as I’m looking up information on this Gargantia anime. Urobuchi Gen is handling the script here, so it’ll be interesting to see how this does. Fate Zero has shown us his potential, and he did do a great job on creating something special with Madoka Magica… but with what little I’ve seen of Psycho Pass, I’ve grown a bit cautious. However, I am pretty glad that there’s a lot more science fiction anime out this season.

Involvement of certain immensely overrated people aside, I can’t see a whole lot of appeal here. It feels almost like they came up with this after watching Full Metal Panic and decide to take those ideas and reform them just enough to look original to the kids nowadays who have never seen or heard of that series. Add in some attempts at appearing edgy to the easily fooled and misguided viewers rushing to praise anything stamped with the names of those everyone else told them are genius content creators lauded enough by said groupies they could paint their name on the Rosetta stone itself and claim it was their unique work without being doubted as a revolutionary mind for a second.

I could use another season of Full Metal Panic Fumoffu :3

I think everyone could use another season of Fumoffu, or even another season of the actual show provided it doesn’t follow the lame emo fest that was the second season.

I preferred the shorts personally. A lot of the fun of this series was lost with the episodes stretched out becoming rather sparsely populated by the same level of humor.

An action anime that looks as stupid as its premise… There is something wrong when Kenshin, Samurai Champloo, and Samurai Deeper Kyo are the only anime I can recall from this genre.

A story about the adventures of the Edo era Orkin man. Just like the commercials imply he is passionate about pest control, truly an inspirational story for those looking to go into the pest control trade.

I didn’t know that Watase Yuu did shounen work, as I’m only familiar with her Fushigi Yugi series, which I watched long ago before I knew what the shoujo genre was. So with magic, fantasy, different worlds, and perhaps the lack of the sausage fest, we have a Fushigi Yugi catered to the male audience. However, the mention of a pathetic protagonist in a review lowers the chance of me actually watching an episode. Come on, we need more of you hagure yuusha types!

Pretty standard concept though I have no faith in shoujo authors or weak minded protagonists so I think I’ll end up saying pass.

Sparrows Hotel (04/09 Tue)

We had assassins going to school in one season, and now we’ll be dealing with them handling a business hotel. With the emphasis on the main protagonist’s big breasts’, I’m not sure if the level of comedy they’re going to offer will appeal to me. I just hope it won’t be full of repetitive breast jokes.

And so Wanko implies that all it takes are K on look alikes to get him to rate something higher. Even failing to watch the show it would seem “Hook line and sinker” do not apply only to Micchi.

I am but a weak wanko that must occasionally give in to the visual delicacies of life. Slice of life shows may be falling out of favor with me but I can’t deny the cute character designs ;_; And well, although I did say this was more watchable than the previous show, it’s more like saying I prefer soju over sake. I might find sake more tolerable, but I feel like I’m drinking poison either way :3

She carries the sin of corrupting anime even more than it was before. K on and all its characters are a blight upon animation. Not only was the story bad but they used being “Cute” as a reason to cut costs on the animation itself.

Kakumeiki Valrave (04/11 Thu)

Lacking a lot of details on this, but an original project from Sunrise now elicits a disappointed response from me. After Code Geass R2 and Gundam Age, I just lost all hope. Sorry Kururugi Suzaku, I won’t be watching you and those white knights in action.

Why do mecha series these days revolve around a single unique robot with world ending power and significance being found by some random nobody. Granted some older series have a similar method to bringing the protagonist into a war with mechs, but in most of those the mechs already existed. Older gundam series such as Zeta were similar but subtly different to a show like this. Would it be so hard to throw 3-4 years onto the protagonists age, put him into a military already using mechs to fight to start with? Maybe after proving himself or even some random series of events like they usually seem fond of he can end up with some prototype mech instead. However instead the genre prefers to rely on taking random teen caught in an invasion or some form of attack that ends up throwing them in the cockpit of some kind of power rangers gundam that single handedly ends all enemy resistance, please people for the sake of the genre grow up.

Thinking back of recent anime, I can’t recall one in the past 2-3 years where the giant super robot isn’t defeating enemies at the pace of a Dynasty Warriors game.

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S2 (04/12 Fri)

I was hoping for more Touma, but not in a spinoff. This sequel will focus on the Sisters/Accelerator arc that happened earlier in the series, so we’ll get more of a look at what happened on biribiri’s side. Although the first railgun series wasn’t that bad, it made me want for more Touma appearances. Can’t exactly outdo the main protagonist from the main series :3

I hate this series with a passion. Index itself wouldn’t be a bad series without ya know, Index around to screw everything up and annoy the crap out of everyone watching. The only thing I find more annoying and irksome than this spinoff series however are the fans it has spawned. I physically cringe and write off pretty much anyone who likes this as an ignorant weeaboo it is really that bad of a series.

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko (04/13 Sat)

Even though this is a harem anime, this might be funny as the protagonist is a huge pervert. The premise itself sounds interesting, but in the end that won’t change the fact that it’s a harem anime.

As wanko said, not much unique here. Having read my fair share of eroge with various protagonists and of course stereotypical best friends the perversion themes are wearing a little thin on me.

A busy month full of somewhat almost borderline decent titles and a few probably so bad they will need warning labels for the potential health risks. Likewise there are a few games that perhaps by some miracle granted by the eroge gods will be blessed enough to bring about a diamond in the rough. In the end it could have been a better month and could have been much worse, after a winter drought of decent titles even some of the average games are starting to look better by the month.

Tsuisou no Augment

This is the fandisk for Jirai Soft’s Tsuisou no Augment (追奏のオーグメント). There are after stories for each of the 3 heroines, as well as routes for bracon onee-chan Youko and hentai siscon onee-chan Minami. Oh, you asked about Augment? Yes, the shinigami with the loli voice has a few scenes too. For better or for worse.

Seems they were rather quick to realize the only two interesting characters lacking routes was a problem. Too little too late to try to sell an expansion made up of content that should have been in the original game in the first place I’m afraid.

Sometimes it’s used as a marketing techniques. That’s probably why you always have one or two subchars who steal the show. Like imoutos that should’ve been heroines in the first place.

Marketing a sub character is one thing, blatantly trying to break up content to sell twice is another.

Da Capo III R X-rated

This is the 18+ version of D.C.III, adding new CGs, H scenes, and a new episode called “Ouka no Ultimate Battle!”, featuring Yoshiyuki as the protagonist with most of the D.C.II cast making an appearance. There’s also a 15+ PC version coming out at the same time, but obviously the interest is right here.

More Sara! More Himeno! More Aoi! More Ruru-nee! More Ricca! Sure, there’s probably not too much that’s added, but I’m really looking forward to a continuation of Sara’s ofuro scene in Kazamidori Gakuen. At least this should tide me over until D.C.III P2 next year. I wonder if they’ll introduce new characters and how would they fit them in. Anyways, it’s also nice to have the D.C.II charas return. More Nanaka and Yume! I love being a D.C. fan!!

And so it begins, with the release of a new flagship series for Circus we can expect many such spinoffs to come along over the years to come. No idea why people keep paying for what are essentially fandisks unlocking things that normally would have been part of the game from the start though.

Hayato is a normal student, except for the fact that he’s the owner of an apartment complex which he inherited from his parents. One day, while he was thinking of what to put on the tenant recruitment pamphlet, a memory from his childhood popped up in his head. His first love had told him her dream was to become an apartment wife. So he jokingly wrote down that he was looking for an apartment wife. After a while, he got a call from a prospective renter. She was relieved that there was still a room left for her, as this fulfilled her dream of becoming an apartment wife. When he met her, he couldn’t believe his own eyes: she was his first love who had moved away 10 years ago.

I’m not as intrigued about this game as I have for other ALcot Honey Comb games. Miyazou isn’t in this, as the only writer is Daisangen. Most of the story should be Itsuka and Kaede fighting over who will be Hayato’s apartment wife. Well, at least there’s still an imouto chara in Mana. Everyone knows you don’t need a wife, you only need an imouto (unfortunately no route T_T).

More of the “Pick random reason to surround protagonist with heroines” type of plot from Alcot Honeycomb. It seems with each new release they put less thought into their settings and stories, not that there was much to begin with other than a few exceptions. Although I guess taking advantage of a girl with a psychiatric condition by using foreknowledge to lure her into a feeling of fate as a theme wouldn’t look quite as appealing as their more politically correct variation of the same concept.

Guardian☆Place ~Do-S na Imouto to 3-nin no Yome~

One day, a maid who called herself his imouto appeared before him and abducted him into a waiting private jet. There he was greeted by a stern-faced old man on the monitor, who revealed that Yuuki was actually the grandson of the head of the industry leader of the guardian industry, the Ootori Group. After the death of his son a few years ago, he wanted to pass on the Group to Yuuki, since he was the only remaining male relative.

Yuuki was excited at his sudden good luck, however he was told that incompetence would not be tolerated. He was enrolled into the extremely famous guardian school Suzakukou to become a ‘guardian master’, but… isn’t this a girl’s school? Three girls Ouka, Itsuki and Neon all claimed to be his future wife, and they all ended up living together with him at the dormitory. The sharp-tongued imouto maid Aoi was also there, and she told him that in order not to disappoint his grandfather, he should win the school’s upcoming guardian tournament.

Isn’t this Pokemon!? Well, not quite. Guardians are spirits which help humans, whether it be in love, fortune or work. They are ranked by their abilities and a license is required to have one. Aoi knows how to train her onii-sama: tough love is the best way*!

*Only for imoutos. Amaenbou is good too!

Almost feels like they ran through a mall picking one object that defined each individual shop and duct taped them all together into a giant abomination of “Awesome”. The plot elements are broken down into tiny pieces each stolen from a different place to make something hideously unique. Perhaps that is a little too harsh as maybe it could be enjoyable, but it still gives the impression they tried too hard to cram too many things into one game to focus on making what they did have be ya know, good. Everything comes down to the writer, if they can firmly bind it all together as a maestro of literary duct tape then everything will be fixed and made whole again. However if they turn out to be poor useless scotch tape this game shall collapse into a heap of garbage faster than a younger sister being properly denied.

LOVELY×CATION2

This is the sequel to LOVELY×CATION. Spring has come again and the protagonist has moved into a new home by himself after his parents transfered elsewhere for their jobs. Everyone went smoothly until he received a prediction at a shrine which he had come upon: “Go find the one who will become your partner for life. Otherwise, you will live a cruel life”. However, a non-assertive man like him didn’t know anything about love. At such an critical juncture in his life, will he be able to summon up the courage to find himself a girl?

I love the art by Iizuki Tasuku, who previously worked on Hatsukoi 1/1. Just like in the original, there’s the ‘lovely call system’ where the heroines will call you by any name you choose. I want Hinata-chan to call me Micchi-senpai~! (Although just senpai or oniichan is fine too!) She’s so adorable! Not only that, but she’s good at housework, energetic and has a size complex. Don’t worry, I love you the way you are! Don’t change! They’ve also added clothing and accessory presents and added the ‘walking talk’ and ‘lovely shot’ systems to add more realism to your icharabu. Mmm… icharabu…

Shiny objects over substance. I suppose its not too bad if you have more interest in the interface and options than actual story content and writing. While I like to have extra features that add to a game as much as anyone else, that is my problem here at the same time as it feels those extras become the focus instead of the icing on the cake. To me at least approaches like this always feel like they are putting the cart before the horse in an attempt to show off to draw in sales with as little effort as possible. I mean before anyone plays the game they only have a brief summary, some screenshots, an opening video maybe, and a short often misleading trial if they are lucky, so buyer beware right?

New release date after being pushed back from February. Itsuki has lived an unlucky life. His parents passed away when he was young and his relationship with his adoptive parents did not last long. Now an university student, he took up a high-paying live-in part-time job in a mansion deep in the mountains despite being suspicious about it.

When he got there, he met a beautiful girl who wondered if he would become her older brother. Not knowing what she meant by this, he chased after her into the mansion where many other people had gathered, all but one of whom were around his age. Their task was explained to them there: to live there while playing their assigned role. As foreseen by the girl from earlier, Sui, he was given the ‘older brother’ role, while she was the ‘imouto’.

This strange life began without any problems, until one rainy night when the sound of glass breaking echoed through the mansion. They hurried towards the sound and found one of their own, Miho, had been brutally murdered.

It’s one of those closed-door murder mysteries with a very convenient setting and a protagonist who willingly gets himself involved. I generally would play these only if there’s a character that is worth saving, but I don’t feel that way towards any of them. Pass.

How convenient his parents died and he has no one else around to oversee his actions. When even Micchi points out the glaring problems of a game rather than what to hope for you just know the game is going to be a complete and utter train wreck for the ages. Lets keep things as short and sweet as possible this time in tribute to the complete lack of effort and talent on display for this game. Setting is flawed from the start with closed circle and completely manipulated by the writer to cater to whatever whims they have. Characters just don’t feel right, while no one expects 2D characters to be realistic, these go a step beyond into the realm of 1D characters with no redeeming qualities only awkward issues. Finally the story itself is hardly anything spectacular, standard fare for this genre and even then it feels sub par. For this month if you crave something of a similar vein, go with Kara no Shoujo 2, chances are you will fare much better than with this waste of life.

Akabanzu ~Real na Sekai de Boku ga Kimi ni Dekiru Koto~

Kenta was a normal guy until he was introduced to the popular MMO Alpha. Since then, he’s been totally addicted to it, glued to the game except when he is sleeping (at school). The game basically took over every minute of his life. All his friends and classmates, and even his childhood friend, didn’t talk to him any more. However, this didn’t concern him as all he needed were his friends on Alpha, the ‘god players’, who are just as addicted as him.

One day, the GM offered a special mission to the players and he pulled an all-nighter and cleared it. His satisfaction from completing the quest was quickly replaced with despair as a voice told him that he was too addicted to the game and his character was deleted. The fruits of 3000 game hours had been wiped out in an instant and he felt as if his soul had left him.

Suddenly, a beautiful girl appeared before him. She introduced herself as a civil servant and that he will be enrolled in a rehabilitation program for people addicted to MMOs. Of course, he was angry that his precious character had been deleted, so she told him that if he completed the program, he would be able to get his character back. Immediately, he agreed to join without fully understanding what lies in store for him.

I can’t help but think that they’re trying to sell the game off a SAO-like premise. Even the osananajimi made a chara on Alpha and joined the same guild as him just so she could be with him all the time. Sound familiar? I would be mad as hell if my character got wiped out like that, but in this case, it just means you get to live in a MMO-like eroge instead. Hmm, that actually sounds pretty good. I’d definitely party with Hotaru, if you know what I mean.

I wish they had an event like this in some of the MMOs I have played. Not saying I wasn’t pretty bad with MMO addiction at times myself, but seeing some of the no lifers suffer from something like this would be rather enjoyable. That said the premise is rather flimsy, the MMO aspect feels like more of a plot element to appeal to their target demographics. I find it unlikely to play a central role throughout the story beyond the whole upset over character loss and readjusting to life outside the game issues. Without the whole forced character deletion and program to rehabilitate him part of the plot I feel the story would have gone in a much better direction by allowing the continued interaction with the game itself and the tug of war when dealing with reality. At the very lease they could have Kenta’s account be hacked to jump start the story building off of the loss of his online life, at least then it would resonate more with anyone who played and fill in the story in a more reasonable manner. The inclusion of those two elements in such a way causes much of the theme to be too watered down to have any hope of covering over the standard eroge underneath.

Konata Yori Kanata Made II

This is the 18+ PC port for the PSP title Yaneura no Kanojo. Towa is a second-year student at Tenjin Gakuen, who liked everything related to the occult. One day, he got involved in a fight with a vampire at night and ended up being cursed and left to die. He was saved by another vampire Francesca, but was turned into a vampire in return. He greatly hated being a vampire with eternal life, so he wished to return to being human. Will his wish come true?

The PSP title didn’t fare too well, as it failed to live up the hype built up from the first game. However, don’t let that deter you from trying it out – maybe the trial first when it comes out. Come to think of it, there haven’t been too many vampire games lately. Could they all be hibernating or something?

Okay who in their right mind would be sad over turning into a vampire, I mean really now the entire premise of vampires especially modern day versions is the assumption that everyone would rather be one. Whenever a protagonist wants to go against good fortune and return or achieve a boring life is something doomed to failure from the start in my book. At the very least such characters need some kind of past to build up a reason for something like that beyond “Oh my life has changed a little so I’m going to throw a tantrum”.

Sakura Sakura Festival!

New release date after being pushed back from March. This is the fandisk for love triangle ADV Sakura Sakura. Tooru was still undecided between Nanako and Sakura, but it had gotten to the point not only for him, but for everyone else around too, that he make a decision. A girl who said she did not have long to live told him about a legend that eternal love would be blessed upon those who confess at the Rintoku Gakuen culture festival, and that she wished to confess to the one she loved too. He decided to help her out and at the same time vowed to choose his true love on that special day.

Let’s see if it’ll end up coming out this year. It isn’t required that you play the original game since there’ll be a summary of past events at the beginning of the fandisk… which is a good thing since even those who played the original might have forgotten the story after so long. Not particularly fond of either main heroine (I prefer Kurumi), so I’ll pass.

Maybe the incentive I need to finish this game, I never could get past the point where the protagonist switches. Though not really sure what the value is for a fandisk with this game.

Tsuyokiss 3-gakki Full Edition

Well, that’s the end of this series, so CandySoft can go on to make other games. Considering that GunKnight Girl was pretty good, I think that the future is bright for this company.

Or maybe they will pull a Circus on us and release a Final final version that includes new random characters given routes and some extra h scenes complete with mahjong and poker minigames.

Come to think of it, there’s hasn’t been a D.C. mahjong game yet…

I could have sworn DC made a mahjong game, maybe I’m thinking of something else. Surprising they havent tried that route yet.

Hitotsu Tobashi Renai

Kazuki returned to his hometown after three years away accompanying his father while he worked in another city. He was excited to reunite with his sisters, osananajimi and buddy, but moreover, he wanted to get a girlfriend! It is the goal of every young boy. Maybe his wish was heard by the heavens, but he met four bishoujos… all of whom were friends of his friends and family!?

The heroines are his imouto’s friend (kouhai Aori), older sister’s friend (senpai Natsume), osananajimi’s osananajimi (school idol Sakura) and itoko’s underling (kouhai Risa). I love all the charas, especially Aori and Risa! It really is a brilliant idea, especially an osananajimi’s osananajimi. Be in store for lots of gags, weird faces and love triangles minus the drama. And more gags. This is why ASa Project is one of my fav companies. I’m so glad I randomly played Achikoi a few years back.

Little changes from the standard eroge plot beyond some wording. Many of the heroines in games already come about via introduction from other characters, the only difference here is that they all follow this format instead of one or two. Beyond the introduction itself games like these suffer from a problem when the existing relatives and friends without routes are more interesting than the heroines themselves. Even when they are able to be as bland as whats her face with the red hair and sasumata from KoiSora thus avoiding any appeal they have little point save introduction and that makes the characters bland and the entire concept useless from the start. Potential love triangles only work when you have some say in the result otherwise you better hope the train takes you where you want to go.

It’s purple! And she’s not bland! And I don’t mind just going along for the ride if it’s ASaPro. You know it’s not about the story anyway.

Whatever, she is so bland I forgot what color her hair was, such a boring background character. Even when its not explicitly for story a good story will make everything else that much better. Whether a charage, SLG, or even a nukige the story and writing affect the quality of everything else, even when just for the sake of a few laughs.

Yumeiro Alouette!

A long time ago, Kaname had a pendant which could grant any wish, but he has since forgotten what he had wished for. Now he is enjoying a busy student life at Zuichou Gakuen. One day, his osananajimi Yuu ordered him to sneak into the student council room at night to falsify the news club’s budget. However, he was busted by the student council leader Yuzuki herself. Then she said something strange: “Ah I see, you’re the first one”. From that day on, his surroundings began to change. The new transfer student Suzume claimed to be his fiancée, his kouhai Mihane became his imouto, and a maid Kirara came to serve him.

If I could get an imouto just by getting caught red-handed, I’d do it all the time. The setting is typical of any moe-ge, but I do wonder what wish he had made as a child. It almost feels like this game is for do-M’s with the way Kaname is bullied by everyone else in the trial. The art and character design is nice, but I’m not sure if I would be able to continue reading (I’m not a do-M!).

This protagonist is an idiot, if he could have made a wish he should have wished for this game to never exist, he could have died a martyr saving us from yet another sub par eroge. What a hero.

Kanae was in the ‘charity club’ room at Seitengi Gakuen, wondering if there was anything bad that was going to happen. The students and teachers did not view the noisy club as an official one, especially since he calls it the ‘gang club’ himself. The club’s slogan was to ‘change the world with evil’. For example, to play with kids and steal their valuable time as a child, or to help an old lady with her moving and to cheat her out of candy in return. That is their ‘evil’ and it is this ‘evil’ that makes the club members friends. Welcome to their gangster republica.

The protagonist’s mental age is that of a grade schooler (the character description says so!), which makes sense that he would conceive such an outrageous thing. It’s just another form of chuunibyou… or is it shounibyou? I just can’t not question such a setting, especially when you throw in a genius imouto who skipped a ton of grades, studied overseas, then came back to become her oniichan’s homeroom teacher and club advisor. Even that’s too far-fetched for me. The story is written by Motonaga Masaki, so if you liked Nekonade, I guess you might like this too. I’ll be passing though.

Scary that companies are actually starting to come up with games that can make Micchi balk at the sheer absurdity of it all, quite the accomplishment that. Sadly my impression is that one would require a mental age approaching that of the protagonist in order to be able to actually enjoy such a story. Not only is the setting poorly rendered but the characters and story feel like something out of a comedic children’s story aimed at five year olds. Whitesoft tries so hard to come up with settings more in line with a rail or liar soft game, but frankly they are just so bad at it they need to give up and just make the normal moe charage everyone else does. Thats all their games amount to anyway the horrible settings they think up only make it worse.

Nai Mono Nedari wa Mou Oshimai

Musashi lives with his older sisters Nanami and Misaki, who often use him to their advantage. Lately he’s been getting closer to his cousins Kazuha and Honoka who live next door. It’s like they’re part of his family, or are they like lovers? Either way, every day is full of happiness. One day, all four girls confessed that they had loved him since they were born and asked him to marry them! Suddenly, the delicate balance has been broken and each girl aimed to claim him as their own.

The younger sisters win out here since tsuri-me onee-chans just don’t appeal to me. Honoka is a self-professed ‘oniichan meister’. That’s a worthy imouto in my books. Will likely check this out.

This is about as simple as an eroge can possibly be. The game more or less amounts to “Here are some characters set within the boundaries of a major fetish divided between older and younger for your perusal.” without much else added on setting or story wise. While that is what it is and nothing inherently wrong with that, the problem is these games live and die by the writing, whether they can make the characters and scenes enjoyable enough on their own that the game is entertaining to play. On that I am not too sure they have the ability to stand solely with writing, since other companies realize this as well they add in as many distractions as possible, without those..

Love La Bride

Kenji accidentally kissed Misaki and that meant that he had to marry her according to her family’s customs. However, she had no intention of marrying someone who she did not love and moreover, is a commoner. She suggested to live together for 3 months, after which she’ll tell her parents that she tried to live with a commoner, but it was impossible. However, four other girls also ended up living with them: his imouto Nao, osananajimi Hitomi, senpai Haruka, and Misaki’s maid Sasha. Moreover, they’re all pretending to be his fiancée. What will happen in these upcoming 3 months?

Marriage games aren’t really my cup of tea, but since it’s just all pretending, I guess this could be fine. The art is nice and clean and I love the SDs by Shirasu Youichi. The bracon and meat-loving tiny imouto is voiced by Kiritani Hana, which is more than enough reason for me to be interested. The rest of the seiyuu aren’t shabby either, with Aoba Ringo, Arisugawa Miyabi, Isshiki Hikaru and Kitami Rikka. If I had to choose a bride among the five, I’d probably choose the osananajimi Hitomi. She’s like the perfect wife. Of course, I’ll still have my imouto with me though!

Making use of a tradition or  some kind of familial obligation to bind a heroine or heroins to a protagonist is hardly anything new. While the idea may work as an easy way to bring the heroine into close proximity with the protagonist with little effort for the sake of building up the stereotypical tsundere personality and little else there remains much to be desired from a quality standpoint. Introductory cop out games like this might as well drop the pretense of routes and story all together as it seems many of these games end up being dropped at the end of the common route.

Unmei Yohou o Oshirase Shimasu

This is the debut title for Yonaki Uguisu. The ‘red string mail’ is quite a popular good luck charm among the girls at Shimei Gakuen. If one sends an e-mail to a certain address, it would be received by someone else in the school. It was said that the receiver is the fated partner of the sender, and if they ended up together thanks to the ‘red string mail’, then they would be happy together forever.

One day, a request was sent to the executive club to find out the truth behind this rumour. The girls happily obliged and sent out a ‘red string mail’. At the same time, Souichirou decided to run for the school’s general election, not for the school or the students, but to put an end to his boring school life. He then received the ‘red string mail’ from the girls. Not just one, but every single one which was sent by the girls in the executive club went to him. The girls played it off as just a joke and they all continued on with their own lives. It’s just a simple good luck charm after all, isn’t it? But having known who their fated partner is, they couldn’t help but start to have feelings for him.

I’m playing this. Love stories with a little magic is what I live for. The premise sounds similar to Daito. I have reservations about the writing since it’s a new writer, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt here. After all, it touts ‘earnest love’ as a central theme, and what is more representative of earnest love than a blood-related imouto? Especially one that wants a world for the two of them only. Follow me, my brothers! I sense good things here!

LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME. *Ahem* That said I have to wonder if other people also think that when choosing one out of four girls who all shared the same result a success rate of 25% along with a 75% rate of getting dumped by your fated partner in favor of someone else because they were better and since you aren’t good enough you will lead a sad lonely life of second best, all thanks to one fateful encounter would be a little traumatic. So rather than a game about picking one fated partner it seems this might actually be a dark game about destroying the lives three girls after choosing one of them to help crush the tender young dreams of the other three.

I supposed you can’t tell a book by its cover, but that is…

If everyone is fated to be his partner, that just means the three who can’t be with him will be cast off by fate and abandoned to a cheerless life of neglect. Nothing quite like destroying the innocent lives of schoolgirls for your own amusement right?

Destiny is fleeting, but I’ll dwell on the romantic parts, thank you very much.

Hey it is romantic, you have to cast aside all the other rubbish to choose the girl you really like. Doesn’t matter you are condemning three other people to a life of likely prostitution, drugs, and abuse for the sake of that one girl.

Seven years ago during the great disaster Naglfar Night, a shift in the Earth’s crust caused the land to be inundated by the sea, washing away the soil and drastically altering the world. A great tear in the crust known as the ‘parallel out’ emitted noxious gases which hardened the skin of humans, causing them to crumble into dust. This spelled the end of tens of thousands of people.

Those that were not affected moved away from the capital, which was ravaged by the disaster, to rebuild. After some time, they created a cure known as AS9 for those who were affected by the noxious gases. This allowed people to move back to the capital. Yuuma is one of those who now live within in the capital, while Akashi is a mysterious boy who lived in an area abandoned after the disaster. Their fated meeting would bring forth many unfortunate events.

Yup, another chuuni game by 3rdEye. This time there’s two protagonists. Not sure what’s going to happen, but you have the feeling something will with all those ‘destiny’ stuff. I’ll let you guys have this one.

Shun has always wondered what was on the other side of the stone walls surrounding and beyond the tunnel out of Kaijou-shi ever since he was a child. However, he never ventured out since every time there was an opportunity to do so, he fell ill or there was some family business. After he graduated from Seihoukan Gakuen, he decided right then to leave his hometown.

The next spring, he received a call from his mother, asking him to come back for the Seikousai festival which he had always attended since he was small. His family kept the items for the festival, but this year’s event will be even bigger than normal. His imouto Sana and osananajimi Yuki both had been chosen as the miko for the kagura dance.

As he was returning back to Kaijou-shi on the train, he reflected on why he left his hometown. He had found nothing special on the other side, just the beginning of a new life. However, it felt like he had lost something along the way. Then he could hear his osananajimi’s gentle voice: “Shun-chan, it’s been a while since you’ve been back”. He felt like those words livened his spirits and comforted his heart.

It’s been a while since Lass’ previous game and 11eyes‘ scenario writer Shishi Bunroku makes a return. I like their slightly mysterious settings and world building without the excessive terminology. It’s true that as a kid you’re always curious about what you don’t know, but when you’re older, you yearn for things from your past. I wonder what will happen during the festival… Maybe you should check it out.

So a story about returning to ones hometown, with likely emphasis on how perspective and people change when separated even for a time as short as year. As an attempt at a setting that lays the groundwork for a down to earth style of game it is a decent attempt, not amazing but not bad either. Unfortunately to build off of that requires delicate crafting skills that are becoming more and more of a rarity in the eroge industry. Whether they manage it through a once in a lifetime fluke or genuine skill I would like to be pleasantly surprised by this game, although it is difficult to remain hopeful without something more special to it after so many disappointments.

One day during class, Akito gazed outside the window and mumbled to himself: “… I want to run away somewhere”. “That sounds good, where shall we go?”. He was surprised by the response and looked over to see his classmate in the neighbouring seat smiling at him. He had never talked to her before, but those words made him want to attain his hidden wishes.

His life changed greatly from that day on. He met a strange girl Nia who seemed to be chased by someone in an alley, was approached by a foreigner Norm who took a liking to him, made friends with an ojou-sama Korone who was passing by on a trip, and was closely monitored by his imouto Mirika who thought he was acting suspicious lately. Thanks to this ‘running away game’ which his classmate Renna had proposed, there are no more boring days. However, he still had a wish to find someone who he loves and run away together to somewhere far away.

When I first saw the title, I thought it was going to be them running away from something evil, whether it be monsters, zombies, tentacles or those balding old men who would NTR your heroines if given the chance. Luckily, it’s more light hearted than that and feels more like an adventure to bring some excitement to the monotony that is school life. It sounds like a simple and interesting premise. I would skip school or work to play this (although I would say the same for most other games).

I would run far far away from classmate stalker girl intent on interjecting into my internal monologues too, Fight Akito! Don’t give up, you will escape her some day! Otherwise pretty standard fare sadly.

Hyakka Ryouran Elixir

The ‘patrolling messengers’ monitored the feudal lords in the kingdom for the emperor. They were orphans who were raised personally by the emperor himself, and only the best of the best were able to be named as one. However, the feudal lords knew that so long as they did not commit any grave crimes, the messengers would not take any action. Moreover, since they were not related to the royal family, they were easily coerced by others’ political strengths. 

Bloom had been a messenger for the past 3 years and he finally had been assigned to his own area, but it was in the middle of nowhere. This was because a great noble had bought the lands out of spite after he was reported for illegal gathering of wealth. Nevertheless, he still accepted his position and vowed to do the best for the kingdom.

The area he was to patrol was an idyllic village, with friendly people and a proud princess living in a crumbling castle. At first, he earnestly did his job, increasing the taxes and investigating any secret contact with neighbouring countries, but he gradually he felt like he wanted to live in this town with them. Moreover, he wanted to bring great wealth to the town and revitalize it.

A lot of story background and it still all boils down to being a guy and 5 girls who are heads over heels over him. AXL’s games all end up the same, so I’m not sure if I’m up for another (especially one sans pettanko). One interesting note is that all the characters have flower and herb-based names.

How evil this town is to corrupt such a pure soul, reducing him to a ball of greed. Seeking to improve a town only so he could make more from taxes, using people as livestock to make him money and earn him power. This just goes to show how much of a negative influence small towns can have on a person. A game that chronicles our sad protagonists fall from grace, and the witches who drove him to it by using their small town wiles to seduce his innocent heart in hopes of capturing him for themselves. Hopelessly ensnared we get to watch his steady downward spiral into a puppet tyrant all for the sake of pleasing whichever of the potential cruel owners he winds up with. What a sad sad tale this is.

Madou Koukaku ~Yami no Tsuki-Megami wa Doukoku de Utau~

On the eastern area of the Empire of Melchia, one of the five major countries in the center of Raulbhach continent, the Centax area was under seige by their arch-enemy Yun Gasol allied nations. Angered by the death of his eastern commander, the emperor sent reinforcements to the battlefield. A young general from the South, Weisheit, was among those dispatched. After fighting off the enemy’s fierce attacks, he was appointed as the new eastern commander and oversaw the revival of the eastern front. However, it was clear that they were much weaker than their surrounding enemies. Moreover, each of the four commanders had their own goals.

Following the Ikusa Megami series, this is a SLG with a world combining machinery and magic into ‘madou heiki’ (magic weapons) which are like living dolls that can beat your ass. The battle part is RTS, although it’s simple enough for people who aren’t great at real-time games. The world is pretty big and there’s lots to explore. You can build your town as you wish, assemble your army, and combine monsters to get even stronger ones. It’ll probably take you some time to figure everything out, like an Eushully game. Of course, the best way to see if this system is for you is to play the trial that’s out. The initial impression is that the system has some balancing issues and fixing in general. The dolls are only 70cm tall, which begs the question… are there any H scenes? I’ll be passing if only because I still haven’t finished Soukoku no Arterial. I can’t beat those damn angels. Arghhhhhhhhh.

RTS style eroge confuse me more than any other possible genre choices.  While I can understand turn based or even certain mixes, when carried over into real time I feel that much of the narrative is lost due to the excessive emphasis on gameplay such a choice necessitates. I’m not saying RTS cannot have stories, or stories cant be woven into an RTS system, its just that I feel even more than normal such games suffer from being lukewarm on both sides of their design. Till someone figures out how to make good gameplay that meshes with a good story I will continue to avoid the majority of these titles. Or at the very least learn to implement a gameplay skip feature for subsequent playthroughs of battles you have already won to get rid of the most time consuming and annoying repetition factor any game could have. Dealing with the same levels, maps, or missions every time you want to walk down a different route always drives me nuts.

Koi Shiyo?

This is the first game by Triplethreat. The government took drastic measures to combat the falling birth rate and created Kukuri Gakuen, nicknamed ‘Renai Gakuen’, as a model case to promote love between students. Yuuki’s parents did not outwardly show their love towards each other, so he was never interested in love. However, he was suddenly chosen to attend ‘Renai Gakuen’ despite his wishes.

Accept it, Yuuki. It’s your fate. Go make some kouhai friends. They’re all waiting for you to look their way, senpai. First-timer Kazakura’s art seems a bit shallow, but it won’t bother me too much. I guess Triplethreat will be a chara-ge maker, but let’s see if they’ll be able to make their mark in a crowded market.

Flimsy plot with bland characters, if this is the best Triplethreat can do, I don’t see them lasting long. Good riddance to half assed game makers trying to make a quick buck.

I wonder how many aim to do just that. There sure a lot of similar companies nowadays.

Sadly it sure seems like most of them, even those who have been in the industry for awhile.

After his father’s death, Jin was separated from his 365 imoutos and ended up living overseas. He told them to live ‘strongly’ until he comes back to them. Ten years later, he reunited with his imoutos in Japan… and they are all banchous!? Not only that, but it was said that the strongest imouto will become oniichan’s bride. Could it be that they misunderstood what he said?

For those who are not familiar with the term, a banchou is the person who leads a group of delinquents, like their boss. Of course, this goes against the typical ideal of purity and innocence which imoutos possess. Latte says this adds to their gap moe, but I’m not buying it. Once again, this uses the Live2D animation system. Ah what the hell, I’ll probably still play it.

So after his dad died, he managed to escape hell, but went back… What an idiot.

I wonder if we’ll ever see a return to a more diverse anime package for a season. Besides Maoyuu, everything else is just there to fill up and drain those minutes of the day when you’re bored. In a way that’s not so bad, but it would better if I could just watch something that would remind me of why I started watching anime in the first place. Come on, how about more anime where the characters actually face a real crisis other than trying to make friends or the like >_O. Either way, these 3 minute anime shorts are a great way for me to entertain myself while waiting for a ranked game to start in league of legends!

Worst season in recent memory. Even the shows or well show I was looking forward to turned out to be a disappointment. Seasons like this are why I don’t pay as much attention to anime anymore. Sure it is more popular, but there just isn’t much worth the time anymore for this medium. I can only hope the piles of garbage anime helps kill off some of the excess popularity for the sake of emphasis on quality again.

Puchimasu! Puchi Idol Master (1/01 Tue)

I am a nendoroid collector and I did watch the Idolmaster TV series, so it’s not far off that I would watch these 3 minute episodes! It’s silly, random, and most importantly so short that I can go through a league of legends ranked game picking session with it! Besides, it’s cute seeing the idols with their puchidol counterparts :3

Maou Maoyuu Yuusha (1/04 Fri)

Well, not surprisingly, this anime was on the top of my list this season. It had a premise and plot that definitely cast itself apart from most of the anime in the recent seasons. But beyond that it does feel like it’s progressing a lot faster than it should. The pacing feels off as they’re not covering some events and instead refer to them leaving us to wonder if the source material actually covered this or that. So the execution and direction of the anime doesn’t feel as fleshed out as the manga counterpart I had read. Still, with only 6 more episodes to go, I don’t feel confident about the conclusion of this anime. Either way, with the plot points we’re talking about here regarding economics, war and politics, it does feel like it would need more time.

WATCHING – Technically it’s still better than most of the crap in this season.

If there was ever a show made to prove how badly directors can ruin a series without resorting to art school drop out attempts to be edgy like the director of the Dance in the Vampire Bund tragedy. While this is still one of the better series due to how horrible this season is the lengthy focus on things that could be rushed and skipping over everything else leaves a bitter taste to what could have been a good show for once. Yes the animated medium never lives up to its counterparts this time it is particularly bad, they lost much of the fun lighthearted feel to the series. For someone who is not already familiar with the series they will miss out on many of the endearing scenes in favor of the poor choices of a director determined to trim out everything they found unnecessary. Considering how much time they spent on pointless additions or focusing on important yet not so entertaining scenes the series feels more rushed than it has to. It is a sad day when a director can so totally ruin the feel of a series that it no longer feels like the story and characters you know and love. 

WATCHING – Only because there is not much better this season.

Ore to Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru (1/05 Sat)

If I had to say, this would be a more funnier version of the previous Chuunibyou Koi Demo ga Shitai anime that aired last season.  But to  be honest, I’m more impressed with its usage of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure….  Gotta love the marketing Jojo is getting, and it helps that the anime is currently airing. Other than that, standard romance comedy, and a harem is starting to build for the protagonist.  At this point, I just want to see more Jojo references :3 But I’ll give points to the main protagonist for utilizing chuunibyou in a real fight!

Minami-ke Tadaima (1/05 Sat)

This is definitely a return to more of the style that was used in the first season, so we don’t have the train wreck that was season 2. As usual, another standard slice of life with a cute family of 3 sisters. The interactions between the family and the friends of the family make up the core content of the show. Nothing too different from other slice of life shows, but if you’ve watched the previous seasons, you’ll most likely be picking this up. And hey, there’s now twice the Fujikoka bears!

So random and full of WTF moments… Perfect for a 3 minute short! Definitely my favorite of the anime shorts I’m currently watching as it somewhat has a retro anime feel. One day, Zen and I will open up that flower shop~

The Unlimited Hyoubu Kyousuke (1/07 Mon)

This series turned into a disappointment the instant it made a tie in to Zettai Karen children I think was the title? Well whatever the parent series is for this show I felt the perspective was interesting as it followed what was essentially a terrorist cell and what their goals were. Unfortunately as I avoided the original series I was shocked by how stupid it was when everything fell apart the instant they brought in the original cast during episode five or six I believe it was. Being reminded of the reason I avoided the first series yet in a way that ruins this series by linking things as such just ruined everything that came before and made me instantly drop this show. Go back in time and kill off those three annoying girls from Japan, banishing them to be erased from existence and maybe just maybe this would be worth watching again.

Sometimes.. no, I believe  these anime are attempting to turn us into monsters. KyoAni has once again created a moe show without equal this season. The designs and characters are so cute and fluffy that you can feel your brain rot. Add in a fat talking bird for laughs, KyoAni has completed a part of their conquest in moefying the whole of Japan. So for all you guys who want to take some cuteness home, this is definitely your cup of tea.

Weird series that focuses on stalking. May have been more fun had there been more amusing comedy, sadly much of it was just rather boring. Tsundere stalker sister who obsesses over her brother who pampers her along with random delusions and painfully stupid scenes that exist to be laughed at but somehow are just so silly they aren’t funny anymore.

Loli butts…. definitely the successor of Strike Witches! If you’re aiming for cute lolis and every opportunity to see them flash their butts, say no more, your prayers have been answered. Sure we have an anime about fighting off an invasion of these alien beings, but hey when the world is in danger, even the genius scientist grandpa is more concerned about the power of loli love.  So if you’re looking for loli fanservice at its finest, feel free to pop in and get more of the screenshot I put up above!

Kotoura-san (1/10 Thu)

For a romance comedy, this didn’t exactly have much in the comedy department. As a matter of fact, the first episode is a pretty sad case of child abandonment. If only Kotoura-san had Saiki Kusuo‘s family then maybe this show would actually be watchable. But overall,  telepathic girl meets boy, perverted boy who attracts her with the power of his ero thoughts, joins club and eventually makes more friends. Even with the ESP, this show just doesn’t seem too different from the rest out there.

Mondai-ji tachi ga Isekai Kara Kuru Desuyo? (1/11 Fri)

Just like the former Dog Days, humans have been transported to another world to fight in these “games”. As they join a community to build up its power/reputation, this is just another cute show with some action and fan service. With so little to watch this season, I’m just in it for the big-breasted bunny girl and the loli maid vampire :3

As Wanko so astutely pointed out, here we have a better version of Dog Days. While much of the essence focusing on games remains the same, unlike Dog Days which was far more G rated child oriented characters and the setting feel more complimentary. Not to say this is some sort of deep and mature series, it certainly is not, simply relative to Dog Days it comes across as better thought out. Without having to resort to giving everyone animal ears to look cute and appeal to that market  the plot is nothing special, nor are the characters. It is nice however to see a capable protagonist, something sorely lacking every since Shinji made his appearance. Maybe it is just how lame this season is that makes the show worth watching but as one of the few series that isn’t obnoxiously moe in the dumbest ways it at least gives me something tolerable to watch.

I completely forgot to mention the protagonist, but Zen is right regarding the appeal of these hagure yuusha type characters. These characters alone can sometimes carry a show, and it goes to show we’re in need of more badass heroes. This type actually used to be more prevalent in the past, until the current herbivore types took over. If only we can see more of them, then it would make more of the shows bearable :3

Pocket ni Koi o Tsumete

New release date after being pushed back from February. This is the debut title for Aozora Biscuit. The gender split in Sayahama-chou’s Kouchourinkai Gakuen is greatly imbalanced, with 2 boys for every 8 girls. However, it’s not like a harem situation for the boys since they are treated as nobodies. Faced with a dimming future, the boys decided to create an unofficial ‘hero club’ with the aim to become people that everyone will want to have around.

Pokekoi uses the same Live2D animation system as Latte’s Imosen. From the CGs, it seems like this is closer to a nukige and the setting sure does allow for it (every boy gets 4 girls based on the gender split!). Obviously Mau is my type of heroine (berets make everything better), but I’m undecided if that’s enough for me to even consider playing this. And oh god, that denpa OP.

When a game does so little to properly establish the setting in a way that makes explaining the situation at least plausible if not completely logical you know there is very little emphasis on the writing and story. What is left then typically comes down to characters and H scenes. Sadly these days we have a label for sub par games that need a word to hide behind so they can excuse themselves from writing anything halfway decent because hey the characters look cute, ya know those things called charage? While this leans more towards the nuki side of games my point is that even if you like the way the characters in games like these look, why bother when their stories and development are so poorly written?

LOVESICK PUPPIES -Bokura wa Koi Suru Tame ni Umarete Kita-

New release date after being pushed back from February. This is the first game by COSMIC CUTE. Kotarou is a normal student at Hatao Gakuen who is a member of the ‘counselling room’. The ‘counselling room’ was viewed by many as a place for complaints and random requests. Even though he was pitied by them for being part of some a troublesome place, he didn’t mind it since he naturally liked helping out with other people’s problems.

One day, he was entrusted with a girl named Orie, who had committed a crime which almost got her expelled from the school. Even though her attitude was difficult to deal with, she earnestly completed all the tasks which he assigned to her. When she found out that he was living in an apartment, she implored him to let her stay there. After finding out the reason why she was so insistent, he agreed to take her in.

But not soon thereafter, his uncle informed him that the apartment will be demolished. He didn’t want to lose his home filled with memories, while she didn’t want to lose her newly found place where she could restart her life. With the mascot-like Maruna and transfer student Sonya moving in, and classmate Isami and trusted osananajimi Yuuki’s also showing up often, the apartment became more lively. Even if only for a limited time, their ‘family’ bonds strengthen.

Happy happy puppy♪ Wow wow♪ Set in the same world as WLO and written by the same scenario writer Andou Kotatsu, the heroines are like puppies which you wish to care for. I look forward to many puppy eyes and shirt tugs. I particularly want to look after Maruna and Sonya~ Can I keep them? The trial was pretty slow to start off, but it got better once everyone was in the same house. I’m not really sure why they’re including the PDA use (Soralis) other than it being the newest fad. Ayano is quite the amusing imouto, while I haven’t seen an osananajimi like the Kiritani Hana-voiced Yuuki. She just gives off the osananajimi vibe perfectly (it’s almost like she’s been friend-zoned from the start). It should be worth looking forward to this.

To start with cats are better than dogs, puppy or not. Next the use of a club like setting to introduce a means for the protagonist to be forced into interaction with heroines is sloppy. A new teacher, social worker, counselor, or at least meddlesome student, perhaps a class representative or something could have been used in its place to better effect with a more natural feeling. It would have even been preferable to use an existing connection such as a childhood friend or younger sister to establish the point the connections to other heroines can branch out from. Creating a form of responsibility that the protagonist would have towards the heroines via a made up setting detail meant to allow the writer to be lazy about setting up the initial character connections and development is a common form of cop out in the eroge world. While the very beginning of a game is not as important as what comes later it does set the stage and while perhaps not significantly negative to just throw everyone together immediately via a contrived setting with that explicit purpose, a large amount of potential positive character development and attachment is ignored by using this approach. In a game with emphasis on heroines being dependent on the protagonist this is an oversight that hampers the depth that can be achieved with their characters throughout the story. Even more so when writers resort to such means I find it hard to trust that the rest of the game wont follow suit, opting for tried cliches instead of unique and fulfilling circumstances.

Sakura Sakura Festival!

New release date after being pushed back from January. This is the fandisk for love triangle ADV Sakura Sakura. Tooru was still undecided between Nanako and Sakura, but it had gotten to the point not only for him, but for everyone else around too, that he make a decision. A girl who said she did not have long to live told him about a legend that eternal love would be blessed upon those who confess at the Rintoku Gakuen culture festival, and that she wished to confess to the one she loved too. He decided to help her out and at the same time vowed to choose his true love on that special day.

Let’s see if it’ll end up coming out this year. It isn’t required that you play the original game since there’ll be a summary of past events at the beginning of the fandisk… which is a good thing since even those who played the original might have forgotten the story after so long. Not particularly fond of either main heroine (I prefer Kurumi), so I’ll pass.

Maybe the incentive I need to finish this game, I never could get past the point where the protagonist switches. Though not really sure what the value is for a fandisk with this game.

Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o ~Atelier no Koibito-tachi~

This is the after story fandisk for Michael no Otome-tachi‘s lead couple Risa and Miya. Risa’s days are now back to normal after the boisterous best couple poll had ended and the 3rd year students had graduated. Miya still skips classes, but they’ve become a lovey-dovey couple and every day is full of happiness for them. The old school building’s attic had become their secret atelier and the earnest Risa felt a bit guilty for using it as if it was her own place. But after hearing Miya’s story of how she found this place, she found out that it had a history of sweet romances.

They’ve turned from tsundere to full-on deredere, and the game features lots of amaicha scenes. As expected of YurinYurin/Fuguriya, they continue to make what they’re well-known for.

The ‘ningyo matsuri’ (mermaid festival) is held every year in the village of Suminoe-chou, which faces the Pacific Ocean. Takumi helps out with his family’s popular cafe Mermaid with his osananajimi Mizuka and his mother Isana.

On the night of the festival, Takumi came upon a girl with a beautiful voice. She was surprised at the unexpected visitor and accidentally slipped into the sea. He saved her and since he couldn’t let her be in her drenched state, he invited the mysterious girl Shione to his house. When Isana decided that Shione would stay in their house and Matsuri, who he had met at the festival, transferred into his school, his days gradually began to change.

This title is misleading. I thought that they would all be little girls like in OTA-MA!, but there’s only just one. Well, Shione is really cute and I’d wanna take her home. I like the way Takumi thinks.

She is too small, he should have thrown her back like any honorable fisherman would. Obviously Micchi likes to break all kinds of laws related to the size of his catch both above and below the waves. Otherwise standard fare other than the fishy theme.

Ore wa Shoujo Mangaka R

This is the all-ages port of Giza10′s PSP title of the same name. It adds more CGs, including many panty shots. Kenji is not like any other male student at Tosai Gakuen. He is secretly a shoujo manga artist! He used to be very famous under his pen-name Ijuuin Alice, but now his manga serialization had been discontinued in the weekly shoujo manga magazine Comic Charm. But he won’t go quietly like this!

One day, his editor and older sister Chika devised a ‘wonderful idea’ so that his works would sell again: he would become the bishoujo mangaka Ijuuin Alice! Since his dream is to draw a manga that is read by everyone, he would be fine with doing anything to that end… including dressing up as a girl. Alice’s battle of becoming a zenjin (everyone) mangaka is only just beginning!

Giza10 is affiliated with MayBe Soft, if you hadn’t already guessed from the artwork. I always loved their slapstick comedy (coupled with their distinct CGs), although since I remember them most for their Henshin~! series, I probably wouldn’t be able to play this without imagining his pen turning into…

While there is some hope for comedy the game feels rather boring, following an amalgamation of some rather common manga style plots. Add in the crossdressing theme as something that doesn’t have any real relation to the manga artist theme gives the impression of an incomplete story. The game is thrown together more for the comedy value of individual scenes rather than any kind of memorable story or characters, so not something I could find entertaining for very long.

Mirai Sekai no Planeta

New release date after being pushed back from January. In the near future, technology has progressed to a point where people can live both in reality and the internet world, Planeta. Satoru came to Planeta to enjoy a school life in the virtual world. But he was recruited to work for the detective team Sprites after meeting their leader Ayaka. At the same time, there was a terrorist attack in Planeta, caused by a hacker who went by Irurihito.

Never really liked Libre’s games much, but this is written by first-timer Umino Sachi, so maybe it’ll turn out differently. However, it doesn’t seem that appealing unless you like sci-fi stuff.

Best ending for this game? The girl you meet and have H scenes with is a guy in real life, with the ending being you meeting them in a dark alley in complete hard gay attire. Now that would be a realistic near future where you can live in both reality and the internet. In the interests of making things differently you could even have each heroine turn into a completely different type of guy in real life, one could be a fat, balding old man, another the stereotypical salary man, and yet another your typical mahou shoujo fan dressed up like sailor moon or madoka. Man I’m a genius I should totally write these games myself. I suppose in the interests of being a little serious I should point out the fact that while the idea does have some potential, its unlikely to be realized as there is little to nothing here that suggests anything beyond your average attempt at a near future sci fi.

The quiet town of Tounoyama-chou was full of shrines and churches, stone circles and other ruins, as well as an underground labyrinth which was built during the war and other historical structures. It was known as a spiritual place, where many believed in fortune telling and miracles. The protagonist transferred into Tounoyama Gakuen and the fortune-telling deemed him as the ‘destined boy’ upon which the school’s future rested upon. However, a great uproar ensued when they found out that he was just a normal person. During that time, he met many girls and his osananajimi Riri revived the occult club as the ‘destiny research club’ and proposed to see their futures together.

From Schrödinger’s cat to the butterfly effect. WHITESOFT likes trying out other themes, even though I personally don’t find it that well done. Seeing and possibly changing the future isn’t that rare among eroge, but it’d be interesting to see what spin they can put on it.

Boring premise with no real purpose. Such silly setting elements make me physically cringe to think about. There are few games that go so far out of their way and put so much effort into avoiding any chance at having to put even the tiniest amount of effort into their story or setting. Most nukige manage better plots and settings than this, as you really have to try to make things this bad.

Himawari no Kyoukai to Nagai Natsuyasumi

Yousuke returned to his hometown of Oboshiro-mura after 8 years in Tokyo and Osaka. He had received a letter from Father Arakawa, who had raised him up as a child, telling him that the Oboshiro church will be closing and merged with a larger church in a neighbouring town, and inviting him back for one last summer together. He reunited with his childhood friends Yomi, Daiya and Ruka, and also met a little girl named Hina who reminded him of himself when he was a child. This is the beginning of a cheerful and refreshing, yet sometimes painful, summer tale.

The feeling I got from the trial was pretty nice: quite laid back and the characters are fine, especially Yomi (voiced by Natsuno Koori). At the same time, due to the slice-of-life pacing, this might not be for everyone. I’m sure the story will pick up when they delve into Hina’s relation to Yousuke. I want an osananajimi like Yomi…

Nothing special, though every once in awhile that can be just the thing you need. Whether the game is a nice relaxing down to earth read or a failed attempt at such remains to be seen but at least there is some hope for it.

Shukusai no Utahime -Kimi to Tsumugu Asu e no Uta-

This is the first title by MORE. Kaito spent peaceful days in the musical capital of Wolfburg with his childhood friends Rio and Graf. However, his wish for this to remain unchanged was shattered one day when he heard a girl cry for help in a corner of the old town. He brought the girl Yuina to his house and after talking to his father, allowed her to temporarily stay with them since she had no place to call home due to strife. Thus began his life together with Yuina, whose values were quite different from his.

One day, his friends and Yuina heard about a recruitment for performers at the music festival and decided to join it. They worked hard together to make the best memories of their youth, but there were sinister things which were creeping towards them: the late witch, the hidden treasure, and the problem of the eastern district.

The scenario is written by three first-timers: James Date, Yamaguchi Yuzuru and SOH!. At first glance, it seems quite disjointed as the magical elements seem to be randomly thrown in, but it’s hard to make a judgment with no trial out. Not sure if we should be giving the benefit of the doubt to a new company…

While I admire any attempt no matter how feeble to try something even slightly new, I can’t resolve the way they tried to shoddily weld two games together with what appears to be some cheap chewing gum. A story based in a European styled city that revolves around the culture and hardships of the times is one thing. Despite the unnecessary emphasis on building music into the setting this at least gives the impression of a game potentially worth a read. When all the supernatural and random fantasy like plot elements are thrown in however the game then feels like they just lost a game of Jenga as everything comes crashing down thanks to a single bad decision. I always say new companies have to stand out, but not only does this game not really stand out but it tries to bite off far more than it can chew.

Asterite Shuushuubako

This is a remake of raiL-soft’s downloadable game Astelite Jourantan. It details the past, present and future of a space terminal. Again with raiL-soft and Liar-soft’s games, the setting is key. If it interests you, then go check it out.

I don’t think there has been a single game by Rail that I did not find interesting or creative in some way. The saddening part however is that despite the creative mind or minds behind their games being some of the best left in the industry they lack a writer who can realize that imagination on paper. Should either Rail or Liar aquire someone capable of translating from their heads to paper I would be so happy to have games worth playing that I could kiss them.

Bokura no Ue ni Sora wa Mawaru

This is the debut title for POLARSTAR. Hitoshi had been in Sakimihara Gakuen for three months and he still hadn’t joined a club. The astronomy club was in danger of disbanding due to the graduation of the third-year students and retirement of their advisor. He ended up being half-forced to join the club by the scheming of his older cousin and teacher Sakura. He met the other members of the club: energetic transfer student Supika, gentle neighbour Kano, shy senpai Sari, childish-looking but reliable Ayane. They were all new to astronomy as well, so their first outings were full of fumbles. However, as time progressed, they gradually began to change.

Hmm… astronomy club… that sounds similar. The staff for POLARSTAR is comprised of those from TRUMPLE, who were previously ABHAR. I wish they would settle on one brand (unless it’s their way of skirting bankruptcy). I can’t quite place it, but there’s something about the art that I don’t quite like. As for the story, I do like astronomy club stuff (I find stargazing and all the stories about them quite romantic and fascinating), so coupling it with a bunch of youths searching for their own way could end up being a nice read.

Too standard for a debut, astronomy clubs are overused as a cheap way to make settings romantic by using celestial tie-ins. Nary a month goes by without some form of save the club plot being used to round up all the heroines in a nice convenient location with a common goal that guides the protagonists progression on rails leading to H scenes. As much as I love astronomy I have yet to find any visual novel that deals with the subject matter in a moving way, it is always just some cheap and cheesy cliche used in place of quality writing as an attempt to manipulate the reader into feeling what the writer wishes to express. I’ll be the first to hop on the bandwagon for the first company that manages to pull of any setting related to the heavens without invoking my disdain towards their laziness.

Too bad unlike in Jenga, it’s not as interesting when it all falls down.

New release date after being pushed back from February. Due to many satellite accidents, the world was littered with countless space debris. Space development had been suspended and people’s dreams of reaching the stars were stalled. Hayato decided that he could not wait such a long time for all the space debris to clear and development to resume, so he set out to build a model rocket which will be able to pierce through the debris. He continued to try despite repeated failures and the cool gaze from those around him.

On his 99th try, he thought he had finally attained success until his rocket collided with something. Running to the crash site, he found a naked girl holding a rocket. She opened her eyes and introduced herself as Twink, a space probe who had come to investigate Earth. However, she was unable to break away from Earth’s gravity due to the collision with his rocket. He promised to help her return to her home star.

UnisonShift Accent is trying to make a touching icharabu story that seems to be more suited for Blossom. The scenario is written by Hasegawa Ai (Koitate, Koiken) so I don’t really have too high hopes. Nothing wrong with the characters who are all in my strike zone. As a side note, I really don’t like the OP. The song is all over the place and what’s the point of showing the entire lyrics with kinetic typography? I feel like it totally detracts from the video and Ozawa Akifumi and osa’s artwork.

Oh Unisonshift will you ever learn to stay within the boundaries your feeble and uncreative minds can properly conceive and comprehend? I must say all Unisonshift brands seem to compete with each other on how much they can insult the intelligence of their reader base with each new release. On this point alone I will say they are becoming an adept and skillful company with their settings, stories, and even characters. That settled I think it might behoove me to explain in a more verbose fashion the exact problem I have with these companies. To start with given their style of writing (Mediocre standard eroge fare) there is no need to include all the unnecessary extra story and setting elements. In case of this game the alien stalker girl and debris field are completely worthless. They are in place not to add spice but to hide flaws in writing that would otherwise be plain as day and make the game difficult to receive positive consideration. Removing these elements leads to games that are excessively plain and downright boring. Which brings up the reason it is so intolerable for a company to rely on dishonest means and an ignorant fanbase, they do not have a clue what they are talking about with their own settings. If they at least understood the concepts and were able to incorporate that into their games, fine nothing wrong with trying to spice things up. Instead they throw together random words they quite obviously have no comprehension of to make their games more exotic while putting the burden of suspending disbelief upon the reader. For something they expect people to pay good money for this is downright insulting that they expect the reader to make concessions towards them being lazy at their job. I find it amusing how tolerant people are towards slacking off at such a job when gross incompetence at this level would result in immediate disposal anywhere else.
