Saimoe – Qf3

Qf3
Hiiragi Tsukasa (Lucky*Star)
Ibuki Fuuko (CLANNAD)

Time for Tsukasa to join her onee-chan in the semis! I’m still anti-Fuuko. She does have her cute moments, but Tsukasa wins hands down in that department. Clannad characters are so far 1-1 up to this point. Both characters have solid backing. Another close one. Go Tsukasa!!!

My vote: Tsukasa

My prediction: Fuuko

Yesterday’s Result

Qf2
#1 Furukawa Nagisa – 953 votes
#2 Kawazoe Tamaki – 891 votes

Just as I predicted, this makes the most sense. Fuuko has a tough match today and might not make it, so this guarantees at least one Clannad character through. Meanwhile, Tamaki’s loss means Bamboo Blade fans can fully back Kirino tomorrow. Also, Kagami has a shot at taking out a 3rd Clannad character in a row next round.

Some people on AnimeSuki forums are claiming this year is SaiFail since all their picks are losing this round to characters that they themselves don’t like. While I understand their passion for their own favourites, it’s quite rude to call Nagisa or Tsukasa joke or fail characters just because you don’t like them. It offends people who actually do like those characters a lot. Your moe is not my moe.

Sigh, nagisa won. Sorry to all fans of her but I find her to be one of the most boring characters ever made. To the point that I cannot withstand five or so minutes of her talking in the game and have to drop it.

I find myself supporting Tsukasa as well though. Mostly due to my hearty dislike of fuuko, though Tsukasa is probably my second favorite luky star character.

I did NOT help her by choice, in fact I spurned all interaction with her for as long as i could which is why I had to read through her long winded drivel for the fuuko route. Which I am trying to get through just to see how it ends. Nagisa has the whole pity me act on turbo which kind of gets on my nerves personally.

I noticed something else when thinking about the failmoe comment. As far as the characters I am familiiar with they seem rather similar. Especially in regards to the lack of series that are represented, so maybe that is why?

People did complain that over half of it was KyoAni series. A lot of the characters are similar in nature, but that’s just voting patterns. There have been cases before where the final 8 had multiple characters from the same series. Last year it was Rena and Rika from Higurashi. It just so happens that this year it was even more evident. Another thing is that this year there have been more IP blocks than before, affecting the foreigner voter base which sometimes swung decisions.

In the end though, whether or not you think this year is ‘fail’ is dependent on your stance on KyoAni popularity.

I can understand both arguements for it being fail or not fail. Since it is an opinion based issue neither is right or wrong really. For my part though I dont mind since I like a few of the character designs that made it to the finals. That said I would have still prefered a greater variety of characters to make it this far, if not for the variation or personal tastes, then just for the more interesting matchups.

When matching up two very similar characters whoever comes out on top does not always feel like a clear win to me. The factors that change a win or a loss would I think come down to the previous matchups and grudges built on who they knocked out. Or based on a dislike for a series or story and how it ended, and not just a like or dislike for the character themselves.

… and that’s how Rika won last year. Taking advantage of not many hate votes and always facing against characters who just knocked out favourites and thereby getting a hundred hate votes.

If it was dislike for how a series ended, I would’ve hate voted Asa and Hiromi to death.

I agree with a greater variation being better for vote counts, interest and the tournament as a whole. As much as a Nagisa/Fuuko or Kagami/Tsukasa final would be hilarious, they would also be extremely boring. It shows over the past few days that voters are trying to get 3 different series represented in the semis.

Well I do not mean you in particular when I was talking about the dislike of a series ending. Rather bringing it up as a deciding factor when two very similar characters are against each other. In that regard the like or dislike of a story can make a character more or less appeealing.

Perhaps in the future to make it more interesting they could segregate the various series into blocks. That is to say one block would be all the clannad characters, another would be the lucky star characters, a third would be for bamboo blade and so on. That way you limit the number of characters from any one series and only the most popular of each series would keep going.

That would put series with lots of characters at a disadvantage. I’d rather leave it up to the voters to do strategic voting than the tournament organizers forcing it to happen.

I’m not sure how to make it better though. Best Moe and ISML has its share of problems too.

Well it is true that it puts series with a lot of characters at a disadvantage, but with the current system they are at an advantage. Maybe have a character limit?

Maybe other than that seperate them into character types instead? So then at the finals it would become a battle of the different character types?

Just seems to be more of a poll on which character types may be most popular rather than which character is the best. Good marketing research I suppose, and may affect future designs.

I suppose the only clear way to make it work would be one vote for one character then just do a linear list, not as interesting as a tournament though. So in the end I suppose it is fine, if a bit dissapointing at times.

Well, let’s think about what the true purpose of Saimoe is. The end result is noted, but it’s more the journey getting there. Expressing your passion for your favourite characters, being introduced to characters and series you haven’t heard about, hoarding lots of moe pictures, yelling at people who don’t share your moe ideals

Character type tourney would become more of a poll. It’s easier to determine moe based on characters than just one trait. Besides, we all know yanderes win in the end.

That is true, though as is it is sort of a poll in a way. After all when the top eight or so characters are strikingly similar it has to say something.

I understand how the fun is getting there, and really that is the cornerstone of what I like about it. I think with more interesting matches there may be more clear divisions of one character or another. Instead of those who have characters they like in the finals and those who dont and vote out of spite.

Hahaha, well no one can win against a yandere in the end, after all in the end homicidal rampages are hard to beat.
